I'll definitely say the 35L because it's so much more versatile. The 50mm fov is just a bit too tight at times on a FF.

I second this too, if you have enough budget for it. Great lens and covers a nice focal length range.

Also if you're on a crop body, the focal lengths are actually 1.6x longer so your 85mm will be more than 100mm and could be too tight for certain uses.

Canon's USM lenses are quite silent actually. If you're on a budget then the 35 f/2 is pretty good as it's smaller than the 35L. But if you can spare a bit more then you can consider the Sigma 30 f/1.4 cos you never know when you might need to go to f/1.4, just make sure you get a sharp copy.

I would suggest a Tamron 17-50mm non-VC if you budget can allow it.

On a FF I would go with a 35 f/1.4 for street photography to capture more of the environment but if you're more of those who like to capture people, the 50 f/1.2 might be a better choice.

Yup the matte focusing screen really helps a lot in manual focus because the subject meant to be in focus will snap into focus quickly from blurness hence you know that it's in focus. If you go past it then it will all be blur again. Viewfinder will be dimmer but not significantly dark.
