Used ones are quite affordable if u dont mind.. Quite a few in the bns.. If it is your first speedlight nikon ones are recomended to avoid disappointments on the ttl functions. I bought the sb700 ib bns.. Really happy with it.. The size compliments the 5100. I am a noob myself so to avoid...
Imo, both the 50mm and 35mm are the best lens for hobbyist. It will look less intimidating and weigh much less than the trinity lens. :) btw u may want to look for speedlights to complete the set for low light or off camera flash experiments. BBB virus! Hehe.
Magazines would be a good start. Find pics that u like.. Imagine what are the equipment and the positioning of the camera or speedlights.. Inspiration.Endless.
Yup.. I would second that.. I am currently using 50mm 1.8 hence framing a bit tight.. But its a good distance to work with on portraits.. Distortion is not really a problem.. Planning to get the 35mm 1.8 next.. Sigma 30mm if u are refering to 1.4 then i would say its bokehlicious.. But much more...
