yea best to "smuggle" from HK. Just throw away the box and carry the lens in your pocket.. alot of my friends travel to HK frequently so i just ask them to buy for me haha

No need to smuggle... Can keep the box etc, they don't care.

Out of curiosity, how does the Carl Zeiss 50mm/f2 Planar compare against the 50mm Summicron? Most reviews seem to say that they are both comparable, though I would like to hear some opinions at least before I go grab the lens when I drop by New York come January.

In my experiance the Summicron is slightly smoother with the bokeh, and it shifts into OOF areas faster, so what you end up getting is a mushy photo with sharp decently contrasty areas. With the ZM lens, what you get is subject pop, which means the subject is really isolated from the background, and has a good level of non destructive contrast. But at the cost of the background sometimes being distracting, but not bad. Also the ZM gives you richer colors and subtle tone shifts, something Zeiss is famous for.

Overall, the ZM is the better lens IMHO, but really at this point they're both so great it's just subjective. Build wise, the cron is probably slightly better built (I only say probably, because I have no problems with the ZM build, but others say the Leica is the better build).

Again keep in mind I prefer the Zeiss look over the Leica look, and although a lot of there other FL lenses have the same look, when it comes to 50's you can really tell there individualism.

Best,
Adam

BTW, people keep recommending me Mr. Wong.... So I call him up asking about prices and they're $200+ more then HK or Ebay pricing (even when you consider taxes and shipping). So no wonder there's no market here. First must have good pricing, then people catch on like wildfire then you get higher demand. No demand if pricing is high!

I'm sure it's not his fault, and I'm not angry at him, but I'm a bit upset that I was quoted so high, because now I have to wait till my HK trip to buy the two lenses I've been after.

Interesting, I thought his price was once comparable to ebay. Well will feed back to him. But if u are really keen can just drop by his shop and have a nice chat with him, and if u are keen maybe the price can discuss .......

Yeah his prices are way off the current market rate. Not sure whether it's the exchange rate or what, but Hk prices for some lenses are $300 cheaper if you buy it there.

I was also recommended to try Mr Wong for ZM stuff. Didn't have any opportunity to support him as prices quoted at the shop were higher compared to the telephone conversation prior to arriving at the shop when I was shopping for a viewfinder. Didn't need the "take it or leave it" attitude so I ended up buying it online. For much less too. Saved about S$200. Or perhaps I just caught him on a bad day.

Anyone know where I can get a new Zeiss Biogon 25mm f/2.8 for S$1080 locally?

Cheers,

That was also the problem i had. "Take it or leave it". Bad choice, Im was going to snap up all the zm lenses. Now I will do it online or ask my Japanese friends to get them for me.

Probably nowhere local for that price... This is more or less the price for a secondhand one on RFF when you add shipping.

Thanks! I guess so. I'll probably go pick up a new set from Shogun or Tin Cheung then. They didn't have that focal length in stock last month when I was up there. Shame.

Cheers,

i've decided to close this thread... but if some of you would like to have a thread to talk about ZI cameras and ZM lenses, post pics of and pics by ZI or ZM, the how to's and the what not's of zeiss optics, i invite to you pls start a new thread.

but pls stay away from talking about prices and service quality... they can stay in the consumer corner.

i agree that it is an unfortunate reality that ZM lenses and ZI bodies are not well stocked in local shops, but they do come in from time to time. check alan photo, orient photo, and fotografix to name some local shops. as mentioned by some, your other available option is always the internet.

cheers,
CJ
