Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens - for Nikon F Mount

Is such an expensive non-AF lens justified?
Pinholecam can shoot a good photo with a reasonably priced legacy Vivitar macro lens.
See in # 5 of Newbies Corner - What kind of lens is suitable for Food Photography?

Anybody holding a gun to your head, asking you to buy it?

Without those ugly yellow markings I would consider it. ;) It looks more like a cine lens to me...

The yellow markings CMI lah. Zeiss should have consulted ricohflex.;)

I actually do wonder how it compares to the Sony 50mm Zeiss which has AF.

You mean this? It looks much better. £1,290 = about SGD$2,564 which is a lot less that US$3,999 (=about SGD$4953) for OTUS.

USD$4000 ! So expensive ! So heavy ! wait for the new Sigma 50/1.4 ! or maybe the 55/1.2 if Sigma is ambitious, Their S35/1.4 proven a very good match to the more expensive L/G glass.

Its $1899 if u get it from Sony style here in Singapore.. (Which is even alot less than $2564 u mentioned)
Even cheaper alittle if u get it at local camera store.

Wonder which shop carries it now and how much is it locally

Im actually tempted... but not ready to buy till mid next year..... non AF is TOTALLY FINE for any photo where you have 3 seconds or more to compose, focus and shoot.

May need to indent, as such premium stuffs should be slow moving.
In Singapore? The more expensive the camera gear the faster it moves over the counter.

Remains to be seen, see if it moves faster than other cheaper lens.

Exactly...... look at premium watch retailers... anything less than $5000 is cheap. lol

Worth the money.

no denying its high dollars but I agree.... this may well be the sharpest lens for sale today ( new ) of all brands and maybe formats even. ( its made for the D800/D800E type cameras and future cameras High Res that don't exist yet!

from : http://www.lenstip.com/390.11-Lens_review-Carl_Zeiss_Otus_55_mm_f_1.4_ZE_ZF.2_Summary.html

Pros:
solid, huge and stylish casing,
sensational image quality in the frame centre,
excellent image quality on the edge of the APS-C/DX sensor,
good image quality on the edge of full frame,
good correction of chromatic aberration,
brilliant correction of spherical aberration,
imperceptible distortion,
moderate vignetting on the APS-C/DX sensor,
off-focus images very pleasant to the eye,
very good work against bright light.

Cons:
huge vignetting at the maximum relative aperture on full frame.

As you see the Zeiss Otus 1.4/55 had just one single flaw, the huge vignetting. On the one hand I don’t know any 1.4/50 class lens which wouldn’t feature a high vignetting level on full frame.

:o
