perhaps it is the plasticky yellow and red paints of these temples, somewhat common as well in China, Taiwan and SEA. i'm not sure if it is refurbished too. neither do i know enough of the culture there to differentiate whether they are subsequently built chinese buildings or are they truely local buildings of the petsi people (exonym: bai ethnic). it certainly feels better to see cultures and histories unique to their locations when you travel

I understand from the guide, the temples are all refurbished! Actually worse than that. It is a rebuild! a replica. If i don't remember wrongly, some of them are less than 20 yrs old.

Really good pictures...I think they show the beauty of the place. I understand you use the
Nikon D80 Kit DX 18 - 135mm | 70 -300 ED VR ; what exposures and f-stop did you use mostly? I tried to Exif the data, but no data was shown.

Some of the sights are very familiar, so apparently there are different places that one is taken to depending on the tour. Went there about the same time...YES..it was very cold....I really enjoyed your photos.

Glad u liked them. The place is really beautiful. I would say, just point and shoot and the photos will come out nice!

Most of them are using from f5.6 to f8.

Hi Sinkasa,

We are planning a trip to Kunming - Yunan - Dali (& return via Kunming) for 7 days from 15th March 2008. As this is my first photography trip to China any advise as to what to take or not to take would be most appreciated. I plan to take my D80 + zoom 18-200+ Super wide10-20 + polariser + tripod.

A brief indication of your itinary and overall cost would definitely be helpful.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Chan

Chan,

I think you should not miss out Lijiang and the nearby Lugu Lake and also Shangri-la. These are places typically covered by tour groups from Singapore. There are lots of other places as well but this will be for a future trip.

apart from difficulty in transport, the less typically covered place is often the haven for photography. people are usually more open to photography when they are curious about the foreigner. that is something more important than the problem of crowds at touristy places. you also tend not to see people harassing you in order to earn your money.

Hi Chan,

Sad to say, I can't really provide much more info. My trip was a company trip and we went with a tour group. What I can say is that there is a lot of walking and try to travel light. (Don't let the load take the fun out of your photo trip!)

For a photo trip to yunan, you will not be disappointed. It would be good to have a look at what others have taken and think what you could have done differently if you were there.

Since you mentioned a seven day trip, if you are also joining a tour, i presume you will not be going to shangrila. It is a beautiful place!

As david and zoossh mentioned, try not to miss Lijiang and Shangrila. Beautiful scenery. Lijian gu cheng provides lots of photo opportunity. (Sadly it is already quite commercialize)

I will find the iteniary of my previous trip. Drop you a note later.

Hi Sinkasa,

Your photos are awesome. Thanks for sharing. I went to Yunnan too last November. My itinerary was: Kunming-Shangri-la-Lijiang-Dali-Kunming.

Cheers,

Richard
