I am going to Tokyo next week, need some help with the point cards.

1. Can I apply for a card, and if so, what details do they need?
2. Do I benefit from tax refunds?
3. If I want to use the points, is it only applicable to the next purchase?

if you are there only as a tourist, forget the points. Get them to give you the tax rebate on the spot. Application for the card will take 1 day, so you get to use it the next day. Then the points from present purchase will then go to the next purchase.

After all that, if you are not there for the long term eg student, working visa. you cant apply for it without a permanent local address.

But I can use the hotel address right? I will be there for 6 days.

6days dont qualify. My bad, should have just said you must have local identity card.

I got the Sakuraya card on the spot....Just need passport.....the tax rebate will be given as long as you produce your international passport.....the points are given on the spot....you can use the points on subsequent purchase:thumbsup:

So I can get the card from Sakuraya but not Yodobashi and Bic? Relatively speaking, will Map Camera have prices as good as the big 3 after taking into account the points thing? I am sure thta Map gives tax rebate as i have done it with them before.

yodo and bic cannot... i tried b4 already... unless they changed policy... tt was 3 months ago...

Duh! Anybody knows how to check up on sakuraya prices? I don't seem to be able to find a price page like those from Yodobashi and Bic Camera.

the points are only useful if you are a frequent customer, for tourist the tax rebate is good enough already. you can't have the tax rebate and earn points at the same time since the point system is a built in discount system itself. otherwise, go to smaller shops like Map Camera and Fujiya Camera, the latter's prices are much more competitive, easily 10% lower than the big 3, but i don't think they have tax rebate.

You mean I can only have one or the other? The tax refund is only 5%, but the points collected can more than 10%.

why don't you go ask the shops why they don't give you the points then? if you want to ''earn'' that 10% then go to the smaller shops i listed, btw the smaller shops don't give points, that's why they can sell at lower prices.

Quite hard to compare prices from here in Singapore, Map does not seem to list the prices openly, maybe have to visit a few shops every day and night. Will be staying super near Map. Is Fujiya still at that place that is one JR station away from Shinjuku?

it's 2 JR stations away, not 1. it's near Nakano station on the Chuo line

Ah, then it is still there, Nakano station, must remember.

if you take the special express train it'll skip the 2 stations in the middle, if you take the local train it'll be the 3rd station with Okubo and Higashi Nakano before reaching Nakano.

Erm...I got both leh when I bought my stuffs from Sakuraya last year...not sure if they change the policy...in fact I still have the card with me and thinking of going again in a month or two

Anyhow to TS...the prefer cash over credit card...less discount will be given if paid by CC.....so prepared yourself with which ever you think you are comfortable with

Thank you bros. BTW, are prices at the big and small stores negotiable? I am looking to buy some new stuff from any of the stores plus second film lenses and stuff from Map or Fujiya.

Just noticed one thing, the prices between Yodobashi and Bic looks the same!

think they will give you some discount if you are buying a couple of items, not so much for single ones. My regualr store would take 2K off if I got several items from item, big ticket ones.

Yodo and Bic have different weekly promos to compete with each other.. you should check out both when you're there. And depending on the discounts, it may be more worth it to get the store card (if you're buying other items too) than to get the tax rebate. It all depends :)
