for my point of view, if you intend to upgrade to a full frame body ( 5D MK 1 cheapest classic fullframe @ 1.9k on average ), get EF lens instead of EFS and you will be saving some of your pockets + trouble of selling EFS lens away when you upgrade. otherwise 17-55 is a good choice for those who dont wish to move to full frame.
