Hi i'm thinking of buying this camera. Anyone used it or know more about it? Is the lense sharp? It comes with a built-in light meter, is it useful? if light meter is spoilt, should i still buy?

I'm certainly no expert, but from what I have seen and read on the internet, the Yashica mat series seems an excellent choice, and very good value for money too. I've been thinking about buying one myself.

You can view photos taken with the 124G here.

Here's another link, with info and images. :)

i have a yashicamat (non-124/124G) version.. works great... no inbuilt meter but I won't trust those that much anyways...

i just got a 124 for about 80USD. The image quality is pretty darn good at f4. Focusing screen is a bit dim though. The meter is decent in a well lit scene but don't trust it for low light stuff..

Buy the 124 instead of the 124G.
The quality of the 124G internals is poorer than that of the 124. Strip the gears of the 124G and you have a paper weight on your hands.

ignore the light meter
if it is cds and still works then good
if it is silicon cell (as in GX) it will work
if it is selenium cell, most die by 20+ years so forget it.
Just meter manually which is simple

i am going to sell my yashica mat if you are keen let me know, it is a gd camera.

i am sellign to upgrade

i recently made some prints with my 124mat and was amazed that at f4, the sharpness and bokeh rendition was comparable with a hassy 80mm T* lens. In fact, my only complain is that its a bit too sharp for portraits.....

Dear Sikario,
I own and use a Yashica 124: it is a super camera, with a great lens.
The built-in meter works fine, and results are astonishing; of course you can not shoot quickly as with a SLR, but this is a very good camera.
If you find a good offer, I suggest you to try it: it is sturdy and can be a faithful friend for a long time!
Ciao,
Mauro
