Yashica electro 35 rangefinder camera

Hi guys,

I'm quite new to this camera, it's a hand-me-down camera from my mum which she bought many many years ago, probably before I was born. I do not know how to operate it and it seem to run on battery. This battery is not like the normal energizer batteries, kind of a unique battery size. Anyone know where I can get this kind of battery and what film should I use on this? & any idea what kind of effect I should get from it?

Thanks so much in advance! :)

You can DIY an adaptor, and plus 4 LR44 batteries and off you go :)

Another more expensive alternative will be a CR123 and 2 LR44 batteries, which this combo you don't have to make an adaptor.

u will get more help in Rangefinder sub-forum

I'm only using a CR123 + 1 LR44. Works fine. :)

check the clunk sound when you advance the film, there should be one distinctive sound at the beginning of the winding movement.. if not, you have bad POD.. and for battery, you can use 4xLR44 and stuff it with aluminum foil to fill the gap.. that's what i do.. some people recommended SR44 batteries instead due to them having more constant voltage than LR44.. actually, the electro has its own regulator, so it can take voltage between 5.5-6.5v without any problem.. you don't even need to compensate for any voltage different..

Besides all the excellent advice on rigging up a battery, you will need to read the manual. It can be found with a google search. This camera will open another world, the world of your mom's. Enjoy the camera.

If you want to save yourself some trouble, then bring the camera down to Camera Hospital in Middle Rd and ask for Steven. He will be able to tell you what, if any is wrong, and how much will a CLA cost.

Where can I get those batteries? What is a CR123? is that a film? Sorry I'm so noob at all this technical jargon.

no, these are batteries.. LR44/SR44 you can get from daiso also, other than from watch/camera/electronic/convenient shops, about $2 for a packet of two.. CR123 is slightly more expensive, iirc about $3-$4 in convenient shops..

This is the manual..

As mentioned, you can DIY the batteries modification so that it takes modern batteries.
But if you're not confident of doing so, bring it down to a camera shop to have it modified.

I frequent the Camera Hospital at Sunshine Plaza, coincidentally, I got my old Electro 35's battery modified there as well.

Maybe you can ask Steven to check out your Electro 35 as well and see if everything's working.
Sometimes the alignment can be off on an old Electro 35.

He's honest, and is very patient. He'd be able to help you out.

In the meantime, do read the manual that bayusuputra kindly posted! It'd help a great deal.

Thanks guys! Will there be any consultation charges if I decide to head down to camera hospital to look for Steven to give my camera a check? Btw, what types of films should I use for this camera?

Thanks! :)

in my experience, the yashica produces really nice color photos! i loved using superia on it and since you're still experimenting, try some cheap film and just have fun with it! :) lovely machine!!

There isn't any charge to just have a simple check up. It's only after the diagnosis is out then he'll be advise you on what needs to be done and how much it'll cost you.
