With its eye-catching, compact body and relatively low price, the Panasonic HDC-SD9 seems to be quite an attractive buy for a flash-based AVCHD camcorder. At 11.7 ounces with battery and SD card and only 3.6 inches long, it's certainly one of the smallest and lightest full-size camcorders we've ever tested, and is pretty comfortable to shoot. The zoom switch feels responsive, and all the controls seem logically placed and fluid to operate.
It contains a trio of 1/6-inch, 560,000-pixel CCDs with effective resolutions of 520,000 pixels each, as well as an optically stabilized 10x zoom lens. In addition to a handful of scene modes, you can manually adjust iris (aperture) and shutter speed. There's also manual focus as well. An intelligent face-detection mode optimizes exposure for people and a Pre-rec toggle records continually in the background, then saves the previous three seconds after you press the record button. It also includes a useful 5.1-channel microphone
The front of the Panasonic HDC-SD9 features the Leica Dicomar lens with 10x optical zoom. The filter diameter is 37mm and the focal length is 3 - 30 millimeters. Aperture range is f/1.8 - f/2.8. To the left of the lens, when viewing it from the front, you see an embedded flash for still photos.
