Equipment Type: Lens
Equipment Brand: Vivitar
Equipment Model: Series 1 28-90mm f2.8-3.5 (K mount)
Price (S$): $240
Description:
Note: This is a well-known premium lens from Vivitar Series 1 Series that is heavy, manual focus lens and with no 'A' setting from 1980s. Not a lens for everyone.
Instead of describing this lens in my own words, below is the advertisement for this lens in May 1984 issue of Modern Photography magazine.

Other points to add :
- This is not a rare lens, just not often seen locally.
- Yes, rare earth tantalum glass inside.
- It can focus really close at focal length of 28mm with reproduction ratio of 1:3.3 on film which is really special. Most 28mm primes will only give 1:4 and other zoom lens is normally macro mode at the far end (eg. 70mm or 80mm). The difference, more of the background and not just the object only. Below shot is original, no crop.
- You can search online and see that this "cult" has its group of followers.
- It is quite heavy 680 grams but still manageable on K-30 due to its deeper grip. So if you like to travel light and autofocus, this is not the lens for you.
- This is one-touch vari-focal lens, meaning zooming and focusing ring uses the same ring and the focus changes as you zoom in and out. Reason is better optical results but setting up a shot takes time and effort where you frame and then focus. Focus peaking helps in this aspect.
Condition of lens:
A very seldom used lens since its previous owner and me so very little user marks. Only the white paint indicating the aperture values, distance and patents numbers has turned slightly yellow after 30 years and some dots of dust. No fungus or haze. Do note that this is almost the full set with only the box missing. Normally, you will only get the used lens with both caps but my set is with the originals: case, hood, manual and includes a filter and circular polariser.
Many times I had wanted to sell this lens before but after taking a few shots, it just had to go underultilised. Just cannot bear to let it out from my hands. But finally, to fund a project, had to convince myself that a lens is only good when it is being used, not stored. Hopefully the next owner will use it more than I did.
