Description:
I have a pristine copy of the the 70 300vr lens to let go for $600(w filter and everything in the box). My copy however is a grey set which I bought from DD Electronics somewhere in June 2011 so it has a shop warranty of about 6 months. I have used this lens three times; 2 full day shoots at the zoo and bird park and just fooled with it shooting the moon at home and that's about it, in the dry cabinet at all other times.
My experience with this lens is as follows:
This is an FX lens so on DX the equivalent range is 105 to 450 variable aperature 4 -5.6
Robust built, mainly made with high quality plastics.
Weighs about 600+ grams, will be a problem with smaller bodies making the set up front heavy.
Lens is really sharp all the way to 270 - 280 mm (dont really have to stop down at all). It sort of softens a little up to 300mm stopping down to f8 helps.
VR is great such that I could shoot hand held pictures of the moon at f 5.6 fully zoomed and see the craters.
AF is fast and accurate in good light. Was able to get sharp pictures of birds in flight at Jurong Bird Park which was surprising.
AF(while not bad) is not as good in low light or indoor shooting with ambient lighting only which is one of the main reasons why I am planning to get either the 70 200 vr 1 or 2
