The Leica R 21mm F4, this is one lens that rarely appears in the local market for sale, probably less seen than the 19mm even. For about half the price of the 19mm, this lens gives very good value for money. The ultra wide perspective when used on film or fullframe bodies such as 5D mark2 gives a amazing wide angle distortion, which is beautiful for both scenery and interior shots, giving the viewer a perception of space abundance.

As typical of leica prime lenses, this little gems spots the usual high quality Leica build, thus being rather heavy for its size.. This is not surprising at all, since the gears and parts in the lens are made of brass, not just normal aluminium in more budget nikon lenses of the same generation, or even plastic found in today's lenses. Also living up to the Leica name and standard, it the image quality.. contrasty shots with the typical leica vibrant colours, as shown below, combined with modern sensor technology (14bit raw files, 21MP) on dslrs like the 5D mark2, it really gives new meaning to high quality shots.

Another unique thing about this lens is its 4 blade aperture. Rarely (actually we cant even think of another lens) is this being seen in lenses.

Reviews from online:

"There are very few options in ultrawides for the R series. The 3.4 S/A won't fit any other body except the original Leicaflex. The early 19/2.8 is a monster lens (and not significantly better than the 21/4 unless you absolutely need the extra stop)and can't really be filtered without vignetting, the new 19/2.8 is very expensive (almost $2000 *used* in the US) and has no front filter threads at all. The 21/4 S/A is what I'd call Best Available. If it loses sharpness at the edges wide open, it's not a huge problem. And if your shot requires tack-sharpness edge to edge (such as a wideangle landscape) you'd want the camera tripod-mounted and stopped down anyway. By f/8 the 21/4 is a very respectable lens"

"It's actually a Schneider lens that was make for Leitz."

Leica Super Angulon-R 21mm f/4 was first introduced in 1968 and remained in production until 1992. The f/4 variant actually replaced an earlier Super Angulon 21mm f/3.4 design, which was produced for only 4 years from 1964 through 1968 and was a non-retrofocus lens, thus requiring cameras with a mirror lockup. Technically speaking, Leica Super Angulon lenses were not even designed by Leica! Angulon brand name belongs to Schneider Optics, another renowned German optical equipment manufacturer, who designed Super Angulon 21mm as well as PC Super Angulon 28mm lenses for Leica. The 21mm f/4 Angulons are commonly available on the used market with good quality copied typically fetching ~US$600 (as of March 2009).

The optical construction of the lens consists of 10 elements in 8 groups. The build quality of the lens is superb, as pretty much with all Leica lenses - the barrel, the aperture ring as well as the focusing ring are all metal and built to last. The focusing ring is pretty smooth and the aperture ring snaps in into position with a satisfying click and requires a little bit of force to switch. The minimum aperture is f/22 and the ring moves in half f-stop increments. Due to the all metal construction, the lens is not the lightest among wide angles, weighing 410g (14.4oz). Size-wise, this is a pretty compact lens, measuring 78 x 53.5mm (3.07 x 2.1in), although the length of the barrel extends slightly during focusing towards the closeup. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is 20cm (8in) and the lens accepts 72mm screw-in type filters (Series 8.5 in Leica terms).

Sample recently taken using this lens on the 5D mark2 via adaptor. Despite the metal part protruding out from the rear of the lens, this beautiful lens does not have any mirror clearence issues with the 5D markII, cropped bodies needless to say.

Lens in MINT condition, comes with caps and hood. Selling for only $1000.
