Bought without researching first, not compatible with the older Coolpixes it was intended for; this flash's for Nikon cameras with CLS system, won't work with older ones. Bought for $140, exchange for SB-600 of lower cosmetic condition is preferred.

Item sold to a first responder with a full-frame Nikon DSLR at Bradell on Friday,03/01/14. Thank you the other three who enquire but was just a step too late, my regrets to you all.
For the record, the SB-400 was tested with Coolpix 5000, 5400, 8700 and all I got is a blinking LED, flash will not even fire. Looking at those cameras now, the fact that they have a photocell on the body means that they don't do TTL at all. For the 8700, the external Speedlight was detected, I think, as there's a separate icon besides the one for the built-in, and the dark photo that resulted indicates that a flash was expected but failed to fire.
