Launched together with the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark3, the 40D is a representation of various major changes that was being put into place into the X0D series for canon, firstly the MegaPixel count increased from 8MP (in both 20D and 30D), to a nice 10MP. Now.. 10MP is really a good level, though after the 40D, canon put a 15MP sensor in 50D and 500D, followed by an 18MP sensor in 7D and 550D, you will actually soon see in later parts why the higher MP count is not always an advantage.

The other improvements made to the 40D includes a large 3inch LCD, the standard remains at 3inches now, the overall size comfortability of handholding in improved, bridging the gap between 30D and 5D, the hotshoe mount is changed to a newer silver one that does not have its black paint scratched off like in previous models, and more importantly it now does 14bit raw files from 12bit in previous models and of course a frame rate of 6.5 fps (making it the fastest camera for under $1000 in the used market right not, discounting the 1Dmark1 which is only 4MP).

Compared to its replacement the 50D, it lose out mainly in terms of screen resolution though both LCDs are 3inches. It also sports less MP count, but as a matter of fact, this could be an advantage in giving better image quality. Key concepts are pixel density. Everyone knows that 5D at 12.8MP produces stunning image quality viewed at wide open, the 5D mark2 produces equally stunning image at its 21MP full resolution, this is especially compared to cropped sensors. Few people, however, actually stop to think that this could be due to pixel density, when pixel density is very high, the optics of the lens may actually be outresolved, all flaws in the form of abberations (eg chromatic abberations aka purple fringing) start to become significant.

Do the math, you will realise that the 1.6X crop sensor is 1/2.56 of a full frame sensor, thus 5D mark1 probably has the same, or less pixel density that the old 6MP 10D, and the 5Dmark2 only has the same pixel density (no of pixels per unit area) as the old 20D! No wonder same lenses that look crappy on 50D looks good on the 5D and 40D. This is evident from the number of complaints about inferior image quality compared to 40D, when the 50D first came out. The 50% increase in MP on the 50D comes at at cost to its image quality, unless you are using top notch L prime lenses, or Leica Rs... otherwise most consumer lenses are out resolved by the 50D sensor. Bottomline is.. if you do not really need the high MP count, the 40D will perform better than the 50D for you. 40D is also 6.5FPS vs the 6.3FPS in 50D.

Zoomed in, 100% crop of above test shot using the 40D. Look at the sharpness and details, showing the excellent image quality at 100% full blown.

Taken at ISO800, image remains very clean off any noise. This is how good the 40D sensor actually is. Set comes with body, charger, manual and canon batt.

The camera body will come with a free brand new Neoprene strap, and brand new pisen high capacity battery.

Set in good condition, slight marks on one side where the strap goes through. Selling at only $800 fixed. Add $80 for a brand new battery grip from www.mymonstercamera.com
