well, it's not the first u/w casing for a micro four thirds camera. Seatool makes a casing for the panasonic gh1 which costs a bomb (3466usd). then we have 10Bar which makes a casing for the panasonic gf1.

good idea but options for u/w photography will be more limited with a system like this with only one port. you can use the present micro 4/3 lens in this housing but that's only a few lens. Not sure how fast oly will intro new lens to support the system. but looking at the 4/3 range, it won't be very fast. plus you're basically stuck behind a flat port with this system. no dome = no ultra wide angle or fish eye shots.

the new compact pen looks very nice though. :)

Oly is releasing a newer and cheaper Micro 4/3 model called E-PL1..... but the Micro 4/3 system doesn't have a Macro Lens. Using 'normal' 4/3 only Macro lens (50mm f2) would need a converter.... :think:

The listed price is $900USD.... about $1300+ SGD.

Mmmm.... :think:

Oly EP-1 = $1000++
Casing for E-P1 = $1200
Panasonic Macro Lens (not too sure works on E-P1 or not) = $1300
Ports for Macro Lens = $$$ ??

Total = $3500++++ (no strobe light)

Ikelite casing for 40D = $$2100
Port for EF 100mm Macro L = $500-600 ??
Inon strobe ligth (Z240) = $900

Total = $3500+++

If I have an extra $3500 sitting around..... I'll take the Ikelite anytime and stick with my canon setup. :bsmilie:

oh i didn't see the price tag for the lens, 900usd is pretty cheap for a leica! :D

Thanks for posting some numbers, this puts it in some perspective.

well, we're not exactly comparing apples for apples right? anyway, i bought the panasonic gf1 and should be getting the housing soon. so my estimated cost is

GF1 - $1530 (20mm and 14-45mm lens)
Housing - ~$1500 ($1050 USD for 20mm and 14-45mm ports)
panasonic leica macro lens - ~$1300 (from wetpixel, it can fit into the 14-45mm port)

so total cost will go to $4330 if i get the macro lens now. but i can bring it to dive for $3,030. notwithstanding, olympus is releasing their own macro lens, which should be cheaper than the leica. only question is when (their website put it as by spring 2011).

in comparison, cost to house a 500D from scratch
Canon 500D - $1,100 (body only)
Macro lens - $900
Ikelite Housing - $1,800
Port - $200

Conclusion - 500D is cheaper, but I still got the gf1 because it's smaller :)

True..... but most of us here already either own a Canon/Nikon DSLR and most likely.... also a macro lens. :bsmilie:

you have strobes, arms, clamps, sync cords to consider as well. and not forgetting a focus light. :)

my camera gear is 20kg...and that's just for underwater. another 5-7kg for land camera. oh then there's 15kg for dive gear.

lucky dont need many clothes for diving...

Heeheehee.... luckily or un-luckily, I'm still using a PnS camera with Strobe. Half of my photography (Casing + Strobe & Arms) & diving gears weights around 17+Kg..... I 'smuggle' clothings and the other half of my photography gears (batteries + chargers + NetBook), well over 10Kg, onto the airplane..... Its a hit or miss everytime I take buget airline :sweat:

tempted to downgrade to underwater slate, just draw what i see!! :p

now they bring me so they can don't bring a camera :S
