There are proper methods/ways of identifying the North Star, which I dunno how. So have to be flexible lor, and thats where digital is so useful :)
I just use a normal compass, look for north, and compose a shot using your widest angle; 5-10min will do, you'll get short streaks, but enough to find the north star (if visible of course). Then do your real composition...
Makes sense? :)

Well, places like Tasmania also have fantastic varieties of landscapes. But in terms of landscapes, culture, people, Pakistan is sure tops...

I don't think its dangerous to backpack alone there (or at least I don't have the feeling of danger), but driving, could be. Esp with some of the mountain roads, landslides etc...

Haha, we could certainly share experiences; yours backpacking in Scandinavia! :D

Cool! :)

Are cheap are things in Pakistan? In terms of eating and lodging. Pardon my ignorance ;p but is the traffic police there corrupted? I do know that some places in Indonesia, foreigners can be (ridiculously) fined if their car tires cross the white stop line by a few inches.

I'm actually very tempted to make Pakistan my backpack destination next year..

Eating and lodging can be dirt cheap (ie cheap but comes with the dirt... ;) )
Traffic police? Only the major cities have that, and I only spent 2 days in the city (Lahore), so can't comment on that ...
For further stuff, you can email me... gotta go... catch a plane... :)

u do have to be a bit careful. not only the traffic police could be corrupt. normal police, airport customs... depends whom you meet. and if you're backpacking, you never know. it might be safe, but i have heard stories from the locals.

earlier nuts mentioned so many offers to tea. or fruit juice or whatever. well, i'd say most pakistanis ARE genuinely hospitable - they pride themselves on that - but that's also exploited by gangsters (i.e. some drug in your drink...)

food is cheap and good. if you follow advice e.g. in the lonely planet guide, you should be all right.

Thank you, si-fu.

Of course, for backpacking anywhere, you have to have common sense and becareful. I've also heard of some Japanese/Koreans being pelted by stones in Peshawar etc...
Heh, for food, I've never really goto those places recommended by the guidebook.. I goto those local stalls and join them to eat :) But please, again, listen to your own common sense...

behyx, if you're doing Northern Pakistan (which I did), then a highly recommended guidebook is Footprints' Northern Pakistan. Very detailed.
