Coming from the electronics industry, my view on this is that the 10D is a "premium" quality product, while the 300D is a lower quality mass market product...driven by it's price to maximize sales.
300D will therefore be sold at minimal marginal profit, relying on quantity to achieve overall profit.
300D would also have lower quality/cheaper components,etc. Someone mentioned shutter life, this is already an indication of where Canon cut cost to achieve the mass market price.
To draw a parallel example. Next time you go to an electronic store, look at, say, the range of 29" TVs. Look very closely at the picture quality/resolution in the different price ranges. All 29" but quality is different simply because of the components within.
End of the day, with premium brands, you get what you pay for.
