Wireless Remote for Canon 550D

Hi All,

I intend to get a wireless remote so i do not need to rely on the timer.

Anyone can let me know what are the things to look out for? Any recommendations?

What kind of wireless remote are you looking at? IR or radio?
IR triggers are cheap, but you need to be in front of your camera to trigger the shutter. IR sensor is in hand grip (see manual)
Radio Trigger come with two parts: trigger and receiver. Receiver is hooked onto the wired shutter release socket (somewhere under the rubber cover). More reach, not depending on directions.
Check the Mass Sales / vShops here, triggers usually work for an entire range of camera models, not too specific.

is a useful gadget when you shoot with tripod on slow shutter speed often, or need to trigger the camera at a distance.
if you don't foresee you will use it very often, than don't spend the money unnecessary.

If you mean that having a wireless remote will remove the need to use a delayed release of sorts, then you are wrong. You would probably need to cater for mirror movement, which will deteriorate sharpness, especially for exposures of moderate length, i.e. up to 1 second. It is probably less of an issue for longer exposures as the mirror movement will occur for a smaller proportion of the entire exposure. A lot of cameras implement mirror up together with the delayed release. That said, you can probably shorten the wait time (1 second should be enough, compared to 2 seconds default for many cameras) through mirror-up function if your camera has one, i.e. press once to mirror up, press once to activate sensor exposure.

You can also use wireless remote to do bulb function.

Adding on to what Octarine has covered already, there are wireless remotes with built-in timers as well, though those would cost significantly more.. Phottix is a decent enough brand, you can also look at various third party brands... Not very expensive.

Thanks for the advice!

My main intention is to use a wireless remote for group shot and I can join in.

And also I can use it at night where I might need a longer exposure.

I am looking at Canon RC6. I know IR could be an issue as it requires line of sight before the camera can receive the signal.
But i also saw a review that i need not point exactly to the receiver and it can still work.
Wonder how true is that? And also by setting a 2 second delay will allow me to remove my hand in time for the shot.
I wanted to explore the RF option too, but i can't really find much info yet.

Third party is fine with me as long as it works fine and the range is ok. Range for RC6 is 5m.

Then even the cheapest 3rd party IR controller is fine. Just join the group, ppoint and press, lower your arm within 2s. If the IR points roughly towards the cam it's fine. Your tv remote also works of you point to opposite wall inside a normal sized room.

And also I can use it at night where I might need a longer exposure.

For this even wired controller work well. I have converted a computer mouse to a wired controller: left button for focus, right button for shutter and a flip switch where the mouse ball was is for bulb exposure. Controlling a camera via mouse
