Some travel portraits

#11 - Father and son down the ski slope. It was snowing heavily and the baby did not wear any goggle to protect the eyes so the father has used his hands to cover his son eyes while skiing down.

Thank you for your comments. Yes not many dad will do that and in such cold condition (-10C). I myself cannot even endure the cold for long without the face mask while skiing.

Thanks. Will definitely post more when I have the time to go thru all the 3000+ shots..

I am using 5D MK II with 17-40L as the main lens which was attached to it most of the time.
I also have the 135mm and the extension tube if i need the tele side or shooting candids and of cos a tripod is a must for travelling.

A speedlite is necessary in winter for fill flash and luckily i have it with me or i will not have be able to take a good exposure shots of me and my wife.

#23 - Beside the penguin, the polar bear is also a popular attraction in this zoo during winter. This is the closest you can get to this winter predator.

#26 - TV tower. A trip to Hokkaido would not be complete without a visit to the TV tower. Managed to find a good spot as the main street is so crowded with people visiting the snow festival.

#27 - The view of the snow festival along Odori street from the TV tower.

#28 - Sea lion. This is also one of the top 3 attractions (penguin, polar bear) in this Zoo.

You have good collection there.
Regarding father/son picture nothing to really appreciate, he put life of kids in danger (although nothing happen touch-wood). I once ski in US and fall a few times, i can tell you it is very bad experience (later next day i was soar).
so u used 5D + 17-40L everywhere?

Nice series, miss all the good foods & spa there.

For normal people like us, we will definitely not take the risk to put the kids in danger. This dad i believe is one of the skier in the Sweden ski team cos the snow jacket has all the logo and the team name on it.

Yes most of the time i am using the 5D2 with 17-40L. Sometimes i did changed to the 135L.

Thanks. I am starting to miss the food and spa.

Nice pics, did the crane do a 'bombs away' ?

btw, i'll be going to the eastern part next week and do crane sightseeing too. How did you choose Tsuruimidai for viewing as compared to the other sites? Did you drive to Tsuruimidai as there is no JR going there? likely i would be travelling from Lake Akan to the crane sites and continuing to Obihiro.

"Bombs away"??

As i did not drive in Kushiro so the nearest feeding ground will be Tsuruimidai which is about 40 mins away by their bus and it is also much nearer to the cranes but take note that there are only about 4 buses a day that runs from JR Kushiro to the different feeding ground. 200mm should be able to get the crane to fill up 3/4 of your view finder.

If you are driving, then you can go to the Tsurui Ito Tancho Sanctuary then Tsuruimidai then coming down to Obihiro. If you are coming from Lake Akan, then you will probably pass by Akan International Crane Center & Tancho Observation Center.

Are you visiting Abashiri for the drift ice? I strongly recommend that place.
