I managed some "Infra Red" from my ShenZhen trip last month.

Here're some to share. Give your comments, I'm open for opinions. Esepecially on composition, I suck at that.

hi teerex, i like #1 and #4. the whole series is a tad too saturated for me though.. some of the details are being lost.

a central composition works for these 2, mainly because there is a fair amount of symmetry.

#2 is a tad too messy for me - too much going on in the picture, #3 while could work, is a bit too tight. but i understand why.. have been there before.. the space is rather limited. step back too far and you end up with clutter. as for #5, i find the angle, tilt is fine, but it is not dramatic enough. too little looks like a mistake.. so to dispel all doubt, better to go all the way. :) cheers!

Night86mare, thanks a lot for your opinions and pointers. There's so much to learn.

As for the saturation, I pushed them (a little too much?) so as to get a HDR type effect. Guess it does not work huh?

Hey Lee,

IMHO, the pics are too saturated and I still prefer the sky to be blue than cyans.

I like #1, especially #5 (just increase a bit more contrast)... for #1 if you have move more to your left without having the tower behind the global, you might get a better angle/composition. The rest are a bit too tight in cropping. Just my thought. ;)

Cheers!

Thanks Bobby, points noted.

And I guess the HDR thing don't work for IR. Tends to change the Hue of the blue sky. Back to the drawing board

hrm.. hdr =/= saturation, generally has to do with details. i tend to avoid getting too much cloud detail when doing hdr, but when you are doing ir, it is already surreal in the first place, so pushing it all the way while avoiding haloing is pretty good, and can give very nice effects like those here or here.

do you still have the base jpg files used to create the hdr? you are right, the hue will change slightly - so the usual thing i do is to limit saturation.. then bump it up later on.

There may be conventional ways to do things in IR but there are really no rules- at least not as many as with basic color photography. I do think you went a bit too far with the processing but that is how you learn. Push it and see what happens. Keep experimenting and you will find things you like. I think I most like #3 and #4 in this series. Try more things. Different colors (try sliding the hue sliders all the way from one side to the other and see what you like or play around with the other sliders in the channel mixer once you do the basic channel swap). Take it too far and then back it off a bit. Sometimes I go bold, sometimes not. This week I am into tinted black and white. Next week could be something else. Keep up the good work! HDR is something I haven't tried yet. Sometimes it may help sometimes not.

Thank you night86mare and JeffryZ.

Yes, I do like experimenting very much. Spend quite a bit of time with editing software playing with the same pic over and over again to see what effects I get/like.

Post them for opinions.

Go back to the drawing board with the tips/pointers, re-work them for different results.

night86mare - have looked at your several HDR attempts and like them. That's part of the reason why I'm trying it. Original base files? Sorry man, I did those with just one file. Unlike the usual HDR where 5 or more exposures of the same file are required.

JeffryZ - Your works are the fine examples of experimenting. Able to achieve the many different tones/shades of colors. They have been an inspiration to experiment.

I like #1 & #5

is this the new glass? :D

is this the new glass? :D

No Bro, these were done with D200. Shot RAW, then pp from a totally red pic.

The new glass is still with Matt.

teerex - you made these from a single raw file?

if you are using photomatix, yes, often the results come out slightly different in hue, and cannot get back the one you like. i have only managed to retain the correct shades for one of the last few excursions with the sony h2. must have been a fluke and i never got it back after that. :dunno:

Yes, you're right. That's the reason why I tend to get more Cyans in some of the pics.

I'm the type of guy almost never lug a tripod around. Even in the earlier days when I was shooting IR with an un-mod D70. I usually do hand held IR by holding the filter over the lens and shoot.

hi boss!sorry-sorry!don hantam me...tust use u pic to play in more hdr effect in blue sky
