64 bit OS faster becos it can process 64bit instruction & 64bit data in 1 go instead of breaking each down to 2x32bit?:dunno:
The RAM addressing more than 4GB is true. Now can handle really huge files w/o the crawl :bsmilie: I tried a 500MB PSD file which requires god-knows-how-many GB of RAM/swap space... Took me more than 15mins to juz open it :sweat: To be fair, my sys not super duper fast either, an old dual core running 3GHz with 2GB RAM only

No it's not more secure, don't get confuse between 64bit encryption and 64bit OS.

It is not about 32 or 64 bit encryption, they are different thing. It is more secure in a passive way. I list at least 3 things that 64 bit is, at least for now, more secure:
1) Rootkits. Majority of the rootkits will not infect 64 bits system because most rootkits were written for 32bit in mind.
2) Encyption: Encryption is a very processor-intensive task. Due to 64bit OS faster performance, a 64bit system can encrpyt faster, this will make it more convenient for more people to use encryption technologies such as EFS, IPsec and SSL, resulting in better security for confidential files and network transmissions.
3) “Security through obscurity”. But this is debatable.

The encryption software has to be written for x64 or else it's the same speed.
With all the previous OS's, I think the general consensus is that Security through obscurity doesn't really work.

STO is a philosophy favoured by many bureaucratic agencies (governmental, industrial ...etc), and it used to be a major method of providing "pseudosecurity" in computing systems. I wouldn't say "it doesn't really work" but rather "its usefulness has declined and diminishing".

I am currently on win7 64bit with 12gb ram, core 920. Photoshop cs4 had approx 10gb allocated. I can assure you that I am doing burn/dodge in real tim with files that size. There is no harddisk access at all. Without a 64bit OS, cs4 Photoshop cannot address more than 2.5gb ram.

Windows 32bit can address up to 3.5Gb RAM, for some system it only address up to 2.5Gb RAM is due to the GPU. 64 bit OS can address up to 64 Terabytes RAM technically.

Thx for the link. But there are a few things that puzzled me.
1) Why use a mac to run windows? Can u be sure that apple didn't purposely make it run slower to glorify its own OS? How would we know?
2) iTunes as benchmark? Not sure if this is widely adopted software to test hardware. Everytime i read reviews, its like the usual Cinebench, Raytracing, 3D Mark Vantage, Sandra Arithmetic, Sandra Mem, games like Crysis, etc.
3) What about handling SQL, or disk I/O, or efficiency of multi threading?
4) Methods to test OS for parallelism efficiency?
But i do concede that the mac has the best batt lifespan control among all laptops :thumbsup:

I was reading the MS website and found there is a family pack version, cost ~US$150 and can load upto 3 PCs. Not sure if there are student price package for SG? cos all my children are still studying, 2 in Unis 2 in Polys 2 in Primary..
I think the 2 in Primary will qualify but how about those in Polys and Unis? are they considered students as well?

Spend something like 6hrs queuing up to save 70bucks. :think: Bring a book to read? Bring your notebook and play your game while waiting (can you bty last that long?) Got to add transport like taxi w surcharge, or parking charges, makan at McD etc.
If you bought a PC a year ago and an expensive one at that, it might be good to pay 77. But if your PC or notebook is like 3yrs old or older, it is about time to get a new one rather than pay 77, 147 or 217 or whatever la.
Midnight Launch Party? Is there gonna to be a party? Like having some entertainment in the Funan atrium with some shows for those who are there. Some song and dance and performance on stage - I dun mind joining the queue then. Or at least a mini-IT fair.
