Just had a two-day shoot sessions: first day used a thirdparty battery, could only take 80 photos before going flat; second day used the original Canon battery, took 300 photos and the power rating was still two thirds left. The irony is the power rating is Canon (1080ahm) and the thirdparty (1300 ahm).

let the 3rd party one cycle a few times.. it may improve a lot..

thanks! will ask for it :)

I brought a Ittou brand battery 5200mAH from Orient for 450D, original was 1080mAH, almost 5x. It's reliable so far and cost only S$24.oo
;)

Had been using 3rd compatable batteries for many of my electrical devices from handphones to pdas & even notebooks and so far touch wood, no significant problems.

This has been since my new Nokia < 1 week old original battery which costs 3 X price that of 3rd party battery just stopped working on me when on a trip = no phone service!!

I had no choice but get 3rd party battery (I was overseas & no original batteries available anyway - as was told by resellers the 3rd battery batteries had higher specs) had longer storage - longer standby & talktime.

Nokia said sorry and replaced the battery of course - but the inconvenience and failure to function - even at that premium price.

Original battery is not necessary better.

Remember the Sony recall of original batteries for Dell, Sony & other laptops - and the spontaneous fires and explosions even for the original batteries.

Probably equipment replacement/repair damaged from original batteries might be possible from the manufacturers.

Anyway, Canon nor Sony nor most companies make do not make their own batteries - they are contracted to other dedicated battery manufacturers and the branded companies have to ensure standards are adhered to.

So the premium price you pay is for the enforcement of standards and as 'insurance' for equipment damage.

BTW: - Tried getting the Original Battery for 5D2 but no stock from Canon. That's service from the original company - out of stock for one of their items - & for a premium price!

No choice but get 3rd party battery recommended by my reseller - which comes with it's own charger and costs 1/3 price of the Canon battery with the charger included!

you just pointed out the advantage of using original. When the original battery gives u problem, the company will replace FOC and warranty intact.

in the event a mass batch of batteries got problem, recall and replacement is free.

if you buy 3rd party, u wun get all these.

so i rather pay more for original for a peace of mind. :)

Have been using 3rd party Batt with my 10D for years and never had any issues. I wish my 1D3 also have 3rd party batt.

I just got my 1st original extra battery pack for my 40D from HK.Paid ard $60 for it!

BTW, I wouldn't shy away from 3rd party batteries in the future.

I have both and i can't tell any difference, 3rd party are as good as original.

I have used a non-original battery for my older 400D, and actually found that the battery goes flat very quickly, lasting only about 50% of the original. Thereafter I switched back to original.
I've asked my camera man for spare batteries for 5DMkII, but he says now no stock.
Where do you all buy your spare batteries for 5DMkII, and if non-original, what brand, and what specific capacity?

follow these rule for 3rd party batt:

1) buy from a shop that u can rely on.. normally they know best.. also some shop support only 1 brand of 3rd party (like eastgear)

2) buy from some brands that is well known... as some are really putting a lot of effort to promote their brand and has a good warranty assurance

3) careful, they are fakes of 3rd parties too!

Where do you buy yours from? Do you use mostly original batteries or 3rd party ones?

mostly from HK.. know the guy there, he can tell which one good since he can experiment around.. i dont hv a brand in mind, as most dont hv one.. haha ..

if in any doubt, u can try Phottix... i dont hear ppl complain about it.

also if u fear it leaks and spoil ur camera, then just dont leave it inside overnight.. if u use it often, leak will be rare even for a cheapest lousy one..

Wahahaha... thank you ah! Buy from HK?! Flying there is already more expensive. Unless one is a regular visitor there.

isnt it a little risky to use 3rd party batteries? but no doubt its a cheaper alternative. which brands are the more reputable ones? :dunno:

Hi CheerylGlen, well actually I have been using original batteries ever since I have been let down by a 3rd party battery for my old Canon E400 some time back.
Do look around the forums as the posters are discussing interesting findings on various brands of 3rd party batteries.
I have difficulty looking for an original spare battery for the body that I am using now, and therefore I have just ordered a Phottix battery. Well, the reviews look good. I am willing to give it a try. The only problem is - my camera's LCD screen will not show the battery level with this non-original battery. (Sigh) Something which I am quite anal about, this battery level signal...

Hey, 3rd party batteries for the 5D2 will give you that problem yeah.. no known issues with other Canon DSLRs thus far..

But performance wise, I don't find any differences. So unless money starts dropping from the sky, I will buy the 3rd party battery which can be had at roughly 1/8 of the original.

last week i tried to buy an extra travor batt for my 40d,but tangseebiz seem out of stock .:thumbsd:

Original Canon battery is rated 1800mAh. The Phottix one rates at 2000mAh.
I am quite interested to see how long each one will last. Of course, understandably, how long every single charge lasts will depend on how often one reviews the pictures while on the camera and such.
But so far, the original Canon one has lasted beyond my expectation.

... and yah, when my TOTO opens up big big tomorrow, then will I be able to answer you how life is with money dropping down from above...

Got a 3rd party battery as a spare for my 5Dmk2 from Challenger, that time the original was out of stock. It cost only $40+.

The brand I think is Camera devices CD-LP-E6, come with a charger cos it doesnt work with the original charger. Another issue is that it does not communicate information with the 5D mk2 so the battery indicator cant show you how much battery life left.

But It does last quite long.. hardly ever ran out in a shoot even if I blast off 800 frames.
