Will Canon Prices Go Down?

I don't think we will see the RRP price being adjusted every time there is a fluctuation on the currency exchange. However, the street price should be adjusted if the dealers are getting their stocks cheaper from Canon Singapore due to the Yen depreciation if they want to stay competitive.

Following this discussion I was checking the Canon prices. Could that be the reason that the 24mm ts/e is so strangely priced above RRP?

> TS-E 24mm f3.5L - $2299 (RRP) | $2500 (CP)

Hey Marios, I recently checked the price of the 100-400mm at MS Color and John 3:16. It's about $2500 now (no longer in the $2000 range...) :(

Why complain? Just buy from the cheapest source.

Of all my camera/video equipment, I search most sources and buy from the cheapest. Just to give a flavour, the following are my current setup:

450D: Bought from CP
EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM: Bought from CP
EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro: Bought from Amazon.com
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM: Bought from Clubsnap B&S
HF100 (Videocam): Bought from Amazon.com

... and right now, I am keeping my eye out for the 430EX on Amazon... because it is cheaper. :)

Let's hope the Local Canon prices fall back soon, if not I'll be looking at B&H or Hong Kong stores for better deals.

There is a Canon instant rebate going on in USA between May 3 and July 11. I think for 430EXII, it is an additional USD30 discount.

IMO, The best deal is on 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens - USD200 off

That's a good deal... but did you check out the f/4L IS counterpart? It's selling for only USD1025. That's under S$1550. I just sold off my used 70-200 f/4L IS for $1550! New lens at used price! This one sells for around $1900 at the local shops!

The 580EX is selling for only USD377! That's about S$570. They were selling this speedlight at $600 as an offer if you buy the 50D at the IT fair? :bsmilie:

But you need to consider the GST and delivery cost that will be added.

I usuallly use Borderlinx. The delivery cost is very affordable in comparison to the value of the goods.

As for GST, you need to pay GST even if you buy from Singapore. Take a look at these prices:

EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM - $2299 (RRP) | $1860 (AP-F) | $1850 (JO, Mar09) | $1834 (MS, Apr09) | $1750 (OP, grey, Apr09) | $1875 (CP-P, Mar09) | $1620 (CP-M, Jan09) | $1,850 OP E-quote, Apr09) | $1,834 MS E-quote, Apr09) | $1,883 CP E-quote, Apr09) |

They are before GST also. This lens is selling for USD1025 on Amazon today!

Now that the Yen has depreciated 10% against the S$ from the peak a few months ago, we might just see a 10% drop. But the Yen has to drop 25% to its low in 2007/2008 for prices to drop back to the low levels we saw in 2008. Just wait - there is a time lag.

I seriously not having high hope on that. Business man in singapore won't do that. Why say no to extra profits?

Well, Canon dropped prices by about 20% just over a year ago ..... to get more people to buy. Difficult not to when the competition does it too.

But the question is, will they get extra profits at this price? If demand for first hand canon goods goes down, there might not even be net profit to talk about.

I spoke to the Singapore distributor before, and they told me that the pricing is not entirely up to them. Canon Japan dictates the pricing here. They also want to be as competitively priced as the US because they are losing market to mail orders... but they have little choice.

Erm, I don't see why Canon Japan will be worried about us buying from local or US, it is still sales to them. Unless they are factoring the depreciation of US$...

The consumers have a choice ya.. they can set a target, say, 20% reduction or else they don't buy. If there is enough consumers holding off their purchase.. the manufacture might just do something for the benefit of the community ;p

It's not Canon Japan that is worried. Canon Japan dictates the high price so that they can make more money from Singaporeans. It's the local Canon distributor who is worried.

I just purchased a 430EX for USD240 through Amazon. :)

Hi nottipiglet,

How share is it when purchase online from Amazon? I mean the electronics kind of stuff as i only purchased books from them. I am curious about the condition of the goods that suffers during the transition of delivery to owner.

Any warranty that Amazon guarantees?

Thanks a lot.

Talk to florence yesterday from MS color. She say that all canon product went up by 20% due to Yen went up by 20%. I doubt that the canon prices will go down.
