Thanks for all reply.

However, should i buy 18-200mm, will it be redundant when i later upgrade to a 5dmkii?

The kind of pictures i like to take most are portrait (especially black & white) of people and their expression with strong bokeh. Aside from that, its landscape and scenery.

will the 18-200mm gives me the same level of bokeh that the 24-105mm can offer?

since you say you take mostly are portrait, 50mm F1.4 is the lens for you or if you want try out prime lens first you can go buy the 50mm F1.8 which is cheaper. If prime lens suit you then sell off the 50mm F1.8 and upgrade to the 50mm F1.4

Hi there,

I have a 50mm f/2.8. While not as good as the f/1.4, its great value for money.
Only thing is that you cannot zoom so you have to get pretty close up.
I like to take pictures of people when they are in their most natural expression, so it has to be a distance away...

but thanks for the advice.
50mm F2.8? Do you mean 50mm F1.8?

If you like to take pictures of people from a distance, do look into 85mm F1.8 USM, or even 70-200mm F2.8L if money allows. :)

oh yeah the 70-200 f/2.8L IS...sweet. =D but that one must haf deep deep pocket already.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply thusfar.

Off topic abit.

Someone is selling a 5DMKII with kit lens 24-105mm on the sales section for $4700 and he bought it since april. Is it good value considering that a new one is about $5200?

Cheers!

Yeah, it is currently around $5,100-$5,200 for the kit set. Basically, the $4,700 price tag is about the same as a brand new 5D MKII body only. Check with the seller on the shutter count. If you get a low shutter count as well, and with around 7-8 months of warranty, it should be quite a good deal IMO.

oh yes its the 50mm f1.8. there is no lens that is as cheap and good as this lens.

i think prime lens are super if your subject is ready for your shot. if you are trying to capture emotion and without the knowledge of the subject, i think a zoom lens makes more sense right? am considering the 70-200mm f4 L cos the f2.8 L like quite expensive lor...

but i guess for my immediate trip that is coming up, the 24-105mm makes more sense as an all rounder.... hmmm... decisions decisions...

it really depends on ur style of shooting and ability to read the situation and knowing your lens well. a lot of wedding photographers are using primes and they capture great emotions from their subjects. its about knowing how to read the situation, standing at the right place, knowing what prime to use and visualizing the type of shot you want. lol, anyway yeah 70-200 f/2.8 will be a better lens for more spontaneous stuff. its more versatile too, but the primes like 85 f/1.2L are lighter and faster (technically. i know some ppl are complaining tt 85LII abit slow). ooh 24-105! good lens for traveling!
