Wide angles for A7/A7R

Seems like the extreme corners drop off in quality rapidly. (but considering its FF 19mm... )
Thanks for sharing.

Best bet is still the awaiting FE UWA lens, optimized for this sensor... Long wait leh...

19mm Elmarit-R, V. 1 . . . no ifs, ands, or buts…

Wow, serious pincushion distortion on that building... hahahahaa kidding.

Corner degradation on the top left, slight vignetting at the corners, it looks like adapter problem.

Pincushion AND barrel in the same frame! ;)

There is indeed strong vignetting as well as some degradation at the corners due to the fact that the "out there" 82mm front element pretty much demands a filter, and even a B+W thin filter causes vignetting. In fact, using Leica's original hood (which is HUGE) without a filter leaves the extreme corners black.

No adapter problem, as I use only Novoflex.

I purposely posted a shot that taxed the capabilities of the lens, with both near and far subject matter in opposite corners, and with the lens tilted somewhat (albeit unintentionally) as I was shooting. A shot of one's dinner plate or of the HDB block out the window & across the way doesn't really tell the whole story about a UWA lens.

Those who understand the inherent characteristics of an ultrawide know there's no such thing as a perfect one. The Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 ZE/ZF is the best I've ever used for corner sharpness even wide open. But PP'ing out the CA that gets stronger as one stops down can be a chore. The Sony 10-18mm is great bang for the buck, but its limitations on FF have been well documented on these pages. Several of the M-mount ultrawides are great, but for the magenta cast.

And for those waiting for Sony to make an optically viable ultrawide for the A7/R, don't hold your breath. It's more cost-effective nowadays to enable a camera to do auto-corrections to make up for the deficiencies in mediocre lenses than to manufacture great lenses.

has anyone tried the samyang 14mm? I know they are going to release an fe version but with an adapter for a canon version should be the same. does that lens work?

If it is for Canon, it is almost likely it will work.

SLR lenses don't have much issues due to the telecentric design.

It is the RF WA lenses that are of concern here, with the design of the rear element being so close to the sensor.

But marrying a SLR lens on a A7, is a little contradictory, imho... The whole idea is wanting to have portable compact camera system, and not a huge canon. I would have used a proper DSLR if I wanted that.

Then again you can always find small manual focus SLR lenses, but the adaptor for these SLR lens are too big and awful looking. I would rather stick with M mount lenses.

I did some goggling and found out that the Samyang 14mm T3.1 cine lens is native emount that works on the A7r in FF mode.
I also found others using the Samyand 14m f2.8 Canon EF mount with an adapter and that also works.

So, it looks like the Samyang is a cheap alternative for a 14mm UWA view on the A7r that works..
Even if you buy the NEW FE mount Samyang, they basically just made it longer (in built adapter) to fit the a7r.
Personally, becuase i still have a canon EOS M, i'd rather buy the EF mount so i can at least use it on both cameras. OR i could just buy the cine version of the 14mm and fits natively without the adapter.

Forget the Canons... Go M mount... Then you can easily upgrade to a Leica M240 in the future... :)

haha..no need...leocas never interest me..anyways. .I already went to buy the samyang.. now wait for my adapter to arrive.. then csn test

Ahh how can compare Samyang with Leicas :faint::faint: ...

Cheers

It's ok. You have only started the journey.... still not too late...

From now on, just buy the best brands in the market - Samyang, Rokinon, Bower. These are the top brands of the current time, with the latest technology and innovation.

Don't buy lens from companies started more than 100 years ago, such as Leica. They are old fashion, using low technology. Pictures taken with them all come out funny one... background "blur" "blur" one, only the focus area is crazy sharp. They don't know how to make lenses that can make the whole photos look sharp.

Take photos must be all sharp one, like those from latest handphones. Front and background all sharp.

I totally agree... See what U had got me into???

I m enlightened!!! Tks bro...

And must buy lenses with many times zoom one. Best can zoom from 18mm-300mm. Who will buy a lens with just 35mm or 50mm? Cannot zoom ones are cheap and non versatile.

More zoomz more expensive.....
