Wide Angle Lens for Canon

Hello sidzal.
Your Canon 500D is a good body.
And in my opinion, generally the good Ultra Wide Angles to go with it are the following:

  • Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 - good and generally sharp. Fast lens.
  • Canon EFS-10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 - lose out a little on the aperture side.
  • Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 - fast, good and close minimal focussing distance. But has loss of sharpness at the periphery. But this lens is usually more for the full frame bodies.
I own and still use all the above three.
You won't go wrong to choose either of the first two.
If you give me a choice, I will choose the first, the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.

My humble opinion.

great! was considering whether to get the tokina 11-16 or canon 10-22.. looks like i'll get the tokina 11-16 then.. thanks very much for sharing.. :)

Just do a search in the forum, there is plenty of threads regarding UWA lens, saw somebody posted the link previously.
Wide Angle Lens comparison

comparison IMHO is done few years ago therefore it did not include Sigma latest UWA 8-16MM F4.5-5.6.

Lastly I do agree it all depends on the budget, the brand, the feel..............

thanks! hmm.. the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 looks good too..

canon 10-22... no regrets.. love the distortion perspective at widest end

I would say canon 10-22 mm too.. though Tokina looks good on specs and has some good review too.

The Canon is not as sharp as the Tokina, but it is a better lens overall. Tokina is like a high maintenance chick who only wants to go to a certain nightclub but she is attractive and everyone likes watching her. Canon is a do-it-all housewife who will open your drinks at any bar, she's not as attractive but give it time and she becomes beautiful :-)

Ha ha... I never quite thought of lenses that way! That's a wonderful analogy! Are you a writer?

My wife falls under the Tokina category... beautiful but high maintenance... can't have it all!
