Hey I'm rather new so dun laugh !!

Why you most photographers either use some sort of
white paper / plastic holder to cover their Flashes while shooting ?

isit just a fad ?

e.g 550Ex, SB80x
Aren't smart enought to give you correct exposure when shooting ?

If you cover with white paper, aren't you more prone to blurness as they camera allows you more shutter speed but you're 'blocking' the flash light from illuminating the subject.

can someone explain :)

To bounce or diffuse the flash? :)

thanks

But I see most photographers dun really use bounce. The flash is just aim directly at the subject with the flash cover with paper secured with rubber band. Whats it suppose to do ? Defuse the flash ?

BTW.. A4 paper will do ? Or special diffusing paper is used ?

Paper or plastic tube (omni bounce) better for newbies ?

There's no such things as bounce for newbies. Both Omni-bounce or Bouch card works for all. It's pretty hard to visualise the effect too. Come to seed, test and try it out yourself.

It's all these disucssions that creates confusions all over. Try it, test it, see it!

When the new generation of flashguns was developed to replace the bulb type, many of us recognized the harshness of the light reflecting of the object, especially a person with oily face.

What most did was to cover the flash with a white hankerchief to diffuse the light to try and eliminate the harshness. This method still work if one done have an omnibounce or an inbuild white reflector.

Hope this reinforce some of the explanation the guys were trying to give.

:D :D
