Why you should wait for NEX7, and pass NEX3 & NEX5

frankly if it comes with T/S (touch screen) i will welcome it more, because most of the gadgets now are touch screen.

Hello, your 'review' started by saying that "you played with the NEX 5 for 48 hours and here's my discoveries". Of course a RATIONAL reader will assume you are talking about the NEX 5 right and you DISCOVERED the touchscreen!

Re: Atarandas, when complaining about the quality of the kit lens, I am comparing to kit lenses from other manufacturers. No need to compare to G or CZ.

And yes, the Polo lacks that awful wheel spin of the ROC ;)

Haha point taken

It's sure sharp enough for me, using 18-55kit. (No pp except resize)

went down to pc show for a 5 mins hands-on yesterday. 5mins is enough for me to decide this is not a camera for me.

1. no viewfinder
2. too difficult to get to ISO settings
3. shutter sound louder than SLRs, and feels clunky

While this cam is a great replacement for compact and semi-dslr IMHO.....tat's all to it.
My Dynax 7D is still way better than this in many ways :)

its not meant to be compared to a dslr anyway. Its just a compact camera with dslr sensor and changable lenses.

if have a chance..try using the yr beloved dslrs and test with this sld camera...same priority mode(p,a,s,m)in same scene..doesn't matter if it high contrast, low or mixed lighting scenes
not to show off or anything.... if u think u had seen enough of what this little nex is capable of... think again...not that i biased or anything.... i had handle various brand of cameras well enough to pass an honest opinion.
If there only a fatal flaw with this camera.. i would say it is the lack of the dedicated hotshoe flash...that would make it a viable secondary system for my loans cameras

the shot is over expose...user problem
if yr system expose such as abv... i dare vouch the highlight is unrecoverable
especially more so if shoot in jpeg

..psst ouverture...what mode is yr metering for abv scenes?

Not talking with the over exposure. I mean color is horrendous. Not so good for their target market which is entry levels whom skills in PP is not that much. :)

BTW, I think that's why cameras are fitted with metering so users wont worry much in exposure.

I had owned a Pentax Kx once..if u talking about colour.... we can meet up for cup of tea and coffee and had some test... some thing are best not said online regarding my experience with it.
i can live with the various quirks of various dslr...even the old n noisy sony sensor for it ff..

IMHO, NEX3 and NEX5 are good depending on the user.
  • If you are seasoned DSLR user, NEX3 and NEX5 might be frustrating due to lack of controls and reliance on auto settings.
  • If you are using a basic PnS, NEX3 and NEX5 are ideal upgrade for you.

I might buy a NEX3 for my 65 year old mother. She only wants to point and shoot. She does not care about controls.

Buy her a handphone camera lah ..... when she needs help, she can contact you ........ :p

import iphone 4 at 199USD

Oh geez, I'm not even comparing with a DSLR. :nono:

The color is horrendous because over expose. Sony sensor is too saturate for red channel.

You can try -0.3EV if you shoot with A mode, Overture. I found the metering tend to over expose.

This is my 1st day Nex outputs:

Hope not a detox to you. :sweatsm:

If you guys read dpreview's take on the NEX-5 you will find that the cam has a strong tendency to overexpose. After seeing the pics posted above it is immidiately apparent, its pretty bad. So is the corner softness. Not to mention the pretty inaccurate colours (i'm not sure if its fixable in colour settings though).

A tendency to overexpose would not be a big deal if you could simply dial back exposure compensation...but this is not available in iAuto mode! You have to enter PASM modes to adjust exposure comp. Exposing that far to the right means lots of blown highlights all over the place and really cripples the sensor's excellent dynamic range. This makes it a massive dealbreaker even if used purely in a PnS manner.

Needing multiple button presses to access ISO seems like a mistake

I'm not to fussed about what some are calling the 'slow AF'. Its contrast detect AF after all so we cant expect too much

I've mentioned it before but IMO this cam has excellent hardware (love the size and sensor),ruined by its software, interface and metering, which makes it seem like it is designed to completely turn away enthusiast photographers

I'm definitely keeping an eye out for the next gen model though. If they can tidy up the interface, fix the metering issues, improve the software + lenses and throw in an EVF...holy cow that would be awesome.

I agree what you say here. The software is a problem. I feel some delay to reach some settings. The over expose in auto is a problem too. Just hope next firmware will fix them.

But don't forget it is designed to target users in between compact and DSLR. So don't expect the control as convenient as DSLR, lose control but gain on the size and weight. I am really happy to hang it on my neck after office hour during the trip back home or window shopping with my gf.

Besides that, I am actually quite surprise of the image quality. The wide dynamic range makes the photo shadow area still manage to see the details. It is better than some entry DSLR.

To overcome the over expose problem, I set to A mode and EV always put -0.3 step. However, if using iAuto, it is not all the photos over expose.

There is no perfect thing. I am just happy I made the decision to buy it. No regret to own a NEX.

hmm i shoot mainly in p mode the -3 mode does not have the same effect as on a cybershot and i do nto knwo is it because of the lens as well.

Actually i spoke to a sony retail manager who was asking me for feedback and i took some of the comments made here up to him (sorry to all but i hope our comments are heard). Cos i too feel what have been mentioned so far and serious these are teething problem for a new gadget and it really is something i been looking for hybrid system.

So hopefully sony will come up with a seminar for nex owners (suggested to the manger) to gather feedback and see how both parties can exchange ideas.

In the end this is still a great device. Hoping to be able to use c.z lens soon with a/f function ......;(

its obvious that alot of over critical and 'smart' ppl here are comparing this NEX series against full fledge DSLRs, some reviews online are comparing against a Canon 5D even!

But number of buttons are being complained!??!?! come on stretch your brain power a bit more, want small body, how to sqeeze in more buttons, if sqeeze in more buttons, then smart ppl complain its stupid cos buttons are pressed accidentaly all the time. remember when we were young, those casio calculator watch? maybe those 1 thumb press 5 buttons at the same time style being implemented then ppl will think more.

But then Menu option should be improved more for intermediate users. that i really agree, quite a few steps to get things done.

For those supposedly reviewed it. I dunno if you were thorough enough to know there's an option in setup for screen brightness "auto" to "sunny weather" for easier screen viewing in bright day light. For those who don't know, now you do! :P

It's all about perception, don't go buy a swift sports(compact hatch) and go compare/fight with a VW Golf GT or GTI and start to whine about it. Or don't make it worse, didn't buy the swift sports and go whine while comparing them! LOL

anyway its stupid for sony to make E mount to A mount adaptor and can't auto focus if using A-mount lens! this they ought to be shot.
