Why Shutter Count so High ?

I took a look at the exif data the other day and saw a field called "shutter count" and the number beside it says "38353". Does this mean that my camera has as shutter count of 38353 ? I know it is a stupid question... :embrass:

Why i am asking is because i bought my camera end of last year at one of the show.. dont remember which one. And i definitely did not shoot 38K times since then.

So may i ask if this is normal ? and how is the number derived ?

Could it be the case that my camera has been used before ?

ignore the number. The exif shutter count is just useless number. Not reflective of the actual real shutter count.

Err...so then how are you supposed to see the actual shutter count? I was under the impression that the EXIF data is the only way to find the correct shutter count...:dunno:

Hmmmmmmmm sorry if my answer is wrong but what i did was to take the latest picture and uploaded it to http://photog.hk/cgi-bin/exif.cgi to check my shutter count.

You're missing two important information here : camera model and software used to check EXIF. Some cameras just plain don't supply shutter count (e.g. Canon other than 1 series).

Only way is CSC.. The EXIF number is quite.. off.

Ignore the shutter count on Flickr. My old 400D had 3'2000' plus shutter count on Flickr when the actual was less than 15k.

The shutter has an estimated lifespan. Some professionals change it when it is near that figure, just to be safe and not have the camera fail in the middle of a job. For a hobbyist, not a very important figure.

Well, sort of like the odometer reading of a car when you're buying used. Camera has no "scheduled maintenance" like a car, of course. But most people would like to know how heavily a camera had been used if buying a used one.

Canon has a utility that is supposed to be able to pull that information out. We mere mortals don't have access to it. I don't even know if it is special firmware that they load into the camera to do that, or a program that reads it through USB.

But if the number is still the same from the CSC, then most likely my camera is not new as HN sold me ?

Thanks to all for the information and patience... I will ignore Flickr's shutter count....

Realised that it sounds pretty common for the 400d as discussed in the thread Lennyl shared. I am not alone
