I notice that people here mention quite often TCW when talking about 2nd-hand shops, but seldom others like Prime Camera Centre, P.K., etc. Why? Any history behind?

"Branding" ?

Just like when you talk about Cameras, people usually talk about Canon and Nikon.

When you talk about sports shoes, Nike and Reebok.

That sort of thing.

BTW, where are all the other 2nd hand camera shops?

I onlyu know of a few more at the basement of Adelphi, but the selection there is rather poor compared to TCW.

Why TCW? In my case TCW gives best service in 2nd equipment and price. Not to mention their 3 months warranty on the 2nd hand items except for consignment items.

Had bad experience with Alex Photo and Prime when I wanted to sell my 300f4 L IS and EF 28-105 USM about 1.5 year ago.
Alex Photo:
Offer to by my lenses at $900 (bloodsuckers!) or 25% deduction if I put on consignment.
Prime:
Offer to by my lenses at $1,100 (another bloodsuckers) or 20% deduction if I put on consignment.
TCW:
Offer me my EF 300f4 IS $1450 (reasonable for shop buyer) and EF 28-105 $300 (reasonable for shop buyer) or 10% deduction if I put on consignment. At the end I sold my EF 300f4 L IS on consignment basis and I sold my EF 29-105 to TCW.

Until now I still can't forget the Alex Photo offer and Prime offer to my lenses, I was so angry until I feel blood is going to burst from my head.

I am Nikon user now and I got most of my stuffs from TCW or CS forum.

What's the diff between selling to secondhand shop directly vs putting on consignment ?

Consignment means the shop selling on behalf of you. The 10% deduction at TCW is to justify their service like displaying your item in the window and entertain buyer when the ask about your item.

I prefer TCW for it's large colection of used lens and reasonable price.

The price for Alex is rather high. Prime is not bad.

I put a few items on consignment at P.K., basement of the Adelphi. There's no deduction, but they put a higher price.

* F90: I took back S$500 (a year ago). Initially it was S$520. But the owner called me for discount when a buyer is interested.

* Metz 32CT7 Twin flash: I took back S$80. In the beginning I saw the price tag is S$220. I said to the owner it would never go at that price because at Prime Camera (his brother) there's one at S$170.

* N AFD28-70f3.5-4.5: it was priced at S$375. I was sure it would not sell so I took it back.

BTW, Nikon caps are cheap there. Ex.: body cap = S$5.

cause TCW staff very friendly.....
always there just chit chat with them few hours without any transcations.....:D

the Adelphi's should be P & G.....something like tat.....

As far as I can remember the commission at Prime is 10% which is the standard market rate for consignments. At Camix it is also 10%, at TCW same. If it is more up to you to accept it.

I happen to be at prime asking for the price of a 6 months old AFS-80-200. The fella said $2150. So I asked him what is the lowest he can go. He asked me back in return how much do I want it for? I just thought to myself, do you want to sell the lens or not? Kinda weird way to do business I feel. Not too pleasing to a potential customer. I also asked him if its on consignment ... and he just replied ..it does not matter does it? come on.. I was just trying to know the lens a little more and he has to give me such an answer.

Just my personal experience with them thats all. So guys, what would be right price to pay for this lens (nikkor AFS-80-200) if you were to get it?

Selling to 2nd hand shops like cam workshop will mean a vast discount. These guys are buying from us and will have to stock that camera till someone buys. When no one ever buys, it is a sunk cost. So if anyone wants to sell, I suggest u trade in for something else.

As for salesmanship and approach to potential customers, if one doesnt seem serious enough why would the sales person waste time and effort? Tell him you are serious about something.

I know of a Nick at Camera Workshop so it is easy to ask and enquire. Get to know that sales guy. And if you know Nick better, he would recommend what you should buy...etc.

Btw I also know the boss of Camera Workshop so makes things easier.

;)

A@#$ Photo,

he is also very dodgy....

guess that is why he moved from Aldephi to P Plaza/shopping center!

A V O I D ! ! !

and his pricing like Stock market, go up and down,

guess that is why not all the products are tagged with price....
