Why I love M4/3

Just to clear the air. I'm a M4/3 lover not a M4/3 hater. I depend on my GH2 for most of my corporate work. I love the GH2 because of its size, the swivel LCD, intuitive handling and the great audio I can get from it.(If I want to)
Most of all, the GH2 is very, very reliable. I've never had any overheating issues, write errors or bad files.
I'm most of the time a lone shooter so the M4/3 format allows me to carry much smaller lenses and more significantly, lighter tripods, sliders, jibs and counter-weight.
I love shooting with the GH2 because I have small hands, scrawny arms and failing eyesight. The GH3 is less of a draw for me because compared to the GH2, it is heavier. But I will buy a GH5 in a heartbeat if it comes with focus peaking which is now important because I'm getting older. And I so much want a GM1 to mount atop a jib but I know I'll be wasting the kit lens.
Yes, I also shoot with the Sony VG20 for talking shots, but I always come back to the micro4/3 format for the convenience. I need a sturdier tripod and slider when I use the VG20.
So I'm invested into the M4/3 system and loving it and I can only imagine what a f0.95 lens would weigh on a full frame camera.
I do wish Panasonic would put stronger audio features in their GX line or shrink the GH3. They'll always have my custom. Here's a recent shoot from last month shot mainly with the GH2.

hi Rodney,

I support u haha :)

i love the GH2 as well. regret selling it. lols. I might return when the series has focus peaking as well

Glad to see so many brudders enjoying M4/3! I think the format will gather even more momentum when the new generation organic CMOS are ready. Currently this is a joint development between Panasonic and Fujifilm so you can expect these two brands to have first dips. This is projected for late 2014 , early 2015. The dynamic range of the new sensor is something like 26 stops! Better than today's RED or Alexa! I think it's wise to stay invested in the M4/3 format and the lenses are really getting better and better, not to mention speedboosters and lens turbos.

High 5! GH3 user here too. Hope the m43 community grows faster in Singapore :)

Yeah I think the biggest benefit for me is never having to worry about overheating. The GH3 battery is also supreme. I lasted an entire 10-hour shoot day on 1 battery, and it only dropped 1 bar.

The batt is awesome … My 5D3 uses 4xLP-6 batt while my GH3 uses only 1 batt (for the same usage period)

I'm thinking its not the batt that is supreme, its the panasonic design of the hardware that uses less energy for around the same amount of data rate.

The only 2 things i'm still pissed is the refusal to implement focus peaking and why they didn't use OLED on the viewfinder. The current viewfinder is a little lack in resolution to me.

Wished I cld say the same. I do primarily picture work. None of the m4/3 satisfy my needs (yes, my requirements are high).

I am using a D800 and the weight is killing me. (Including having to bring a heavy tripod and slider).

Sony a7r is over rated in terms of IQ. I wish it was the holy grail but its not in terms of image quality. In fact I am so disappointed by it :p

I wish to move into a M4/3 & hope there's one in the near future for people like me (pic and video users). Haha.

Loving my AF105 now :) I still have my Nikon lenses. Just bought a cheap adapter and a couple of manual focus lenses. The combo is just unbelievably sharp.

I think we are on the threshold of a big jump in sensor performance. It reminds of the time when I told all my friends to stop upgrading their camcorders because big sensors are coming. haha. I must have sounded like chicken little then
But looking at output from current top-line camcorders like C100/300/500, the quality difference between 4K and HD sensor is very clear. Not in terms of resolution, but just the latitude of ungraded AVCHD for example in the C100. If that HD look is the sign of things to come, I will benchmark camera releases in 2014 against that standard.

hehehe.. Yeah but with a hybrid system there is certainly some give and take, even more so when the GH2/3 is obviously geared towards filmmakers.

I must say though M4/3 for video is a highly underrated system, at least in Singapore, even amongst folks in the industry. possibly because Singaporeans are naturally cynical. Lol. people overseas actually have much more respect for the tiny camera and its abilities.

Maybe I shld just stop shooting pics and do video. Then life would be lighter. Haha

How about bringing just a small body m43 like the GX7 for video? You can use your nikon primes for both bodies. Adding a speedbooster will also "double" your arsenal. For example one 50mm lens can be:
50mm for the D800
100mm for the GX7 (without speedbooster)
70mm for the GX7 (with speedboster)

I am happy w the Sony PJ660 you recommended. Size n optical stabilizer is a plus.

Now just bothered by the D800 size. Haha

Maybe compromise lor & get a Sony a7r *sob*

:(

If it's any consolation the A7 and the D800 uses the same chip but different engine

I love M43 too and hate to let go of my EM5, but due to a change of workplace and financial reasons had to let it go. I'm still keeping my Voigtlander 17.5m F0.95 though =)

Yeah Rodney, same sensor but different engine.

Can't replaced the Sony for use for professional work. Can consider it as a travel, casual cam.

If in that case, I was actually looking at Fuji X series like the XM-1 which cost only $1k plus compared to the Sony.

I love the m4/3 size but sadly not the picture resolution. Haha

Anyway ignore me. It's getting OT.

Good move. Bodies oome and go, lenses can last generations.

Was reading on the Panny G6. It seem beside the Key-frame & lower bit-rate compared to the GH3, it would be more suitable for videography with the in-built focus peaking function.
