Why did you choose Sony/Minolta over the others?

$3699 is, well cheaper than $4499.

I risked my own hide to buy the 70-200 from B&H (about 1/2 a year ago for S$3060 S&H+Tax) , but after receiving the lens in its expected condition, I'm satisfied. :)

I think Sony Singapore prices were horrible then, and still mightily bad now... bad enough for the well informed people to pitch their cash together and make their purchases from Hong Kong or the States.

It may be wishful thinking, but I yearn for a day where the prices would drop further. Right now, Sony's DSLR division would make its dough in the end, just not as much from the SG branch.

Sony's non VR/IS lenses don't seem any cheaper to me at all.
Well but of course, you're comparing to Sony Singapore prices too.

Gotta wait for C/N to release a few more IS/VR lens to see if they're really more expensive.

At the moment, I dont believe that having in body IS/VR/SSS is going to make the stabilized lenses any cheaper. just some marketing gimmick i assume.

And even if i save on the stabilized lenses, i get sucked dry with their accessories *rolls eye*

BUT.... i am still a happy alpha user haha!

in the end it's just up to each photog's brand preference.. hope sony SG wakes up & revise their lens pricing

will there be any more lens MO from you guys then?? :D

nah, the hat and box are in focus. Looks like he did centre focus and his DOF was not deep enough.

Yeah, now that you mentioned it... I just gave it a cursory glance... it was f/4 I think... and it was a girl who took this photo.;)

whether it's a girl or a man shouldn't be a problem on the photo . They will need to learn focus hold then recompose properly, or selecting focusing, increase DOV by reduce apperture will cause more noise or motion blur instead.

I post a shot taken by a student using an A700... ISO1600, no flash, 16-80mm CZ at 80mm, JPEG. Colour is good but image soft likely due to shutter speed...
Dramafeste225.jpg

EXIF info as attached. Seemed like the shutter speed is a little too slow @ 80mm. By rule of thumb IIRC should be kept maximum 1/80s for handheld.

Camera Make: SONY
Camera Model: DSLR-A700
Image Date: 2008:02:20 17:14:37
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 80.0mm (35mm equivalent: 120mm)
Exposure Time: 0.025 s (1/40)
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO equiv: 1600
White Balance: Auto
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

Bro, what's SSR for? 1/40 at 80mm should be no sweat with good handholding technique. I can get 1/30 at 80mm to be sharper than what is posted. Remember the subjects were also moving, so might not be camera shake but subject motion or even DOF as mentioned earlier...

Focus was wrong. It was on the red hat, not the girls.

I love Sony because the interface is user-friendly, easy to use.
Super SteadyShot is wonderful, which applies to all the lens including Zeiss & 3rd party Tamron!
You can even see motion meter via the viewfinder. Wonderful for beginners!
Best to start off with A200 or A350.

But what I dislike was the loud shutter sound.
Expensive Sony Lens, A700 battery life quite bad..

SSS (formerly AS) works with all lenses mounted...

G lenses + CZ lenses -- G lenses used to be cheap back in the days of Minolta.. but even though they are expensive now, they worth every cents of it.

Very good standard lenses...

Bokeh (tonal graduation).

User interface... more so with Fn key on Sony DSLR.

Last but not least, I love the "look" on the face of people when you mentioned Sony/Minolta... -- Priceless....

Canon and Nikon also have their very best gear and support behind them and to be entirely honest, each system has their own special way... All systems are great system....

personally when i first saw the sony DSLR on someone's hands (could be one of you guys) i actually felt a sense of power coming from the person.

but with CaNikon like nothing much leh...

wah.. this is getting spiritual

hmmm.... I chose Sony over Minolta because I liked Sony's black colour when compared to the Minolta's white and silver colour. :o

== Didn't see anyone using CaNikon.. is it a new chinese camera imitating the Nikon and Canon at the same time? :bsmilie:

Can't remember why ....... probably BS itchy but I won't choose it again .............. :bsmilie:

Yupe and I think that wide focus was used... and the hat had the highest contrast so the camera went for it instead...

I started with Olympus OM film then wanted AF so went with Minolta Film AF with Minolta 24-85 Lens. Added 50 F2.8 and 85 F1.4 later then bought 5600 flash with Dynax 5D Kit to use my lenses. So I suppose stuck with system because of lens quality. :bsmilie:

I just bought sony A300 a few days. Very new and still very green about dslrs.. Needed an entry-level camera but it has to be idiot-proof. Was considering between Nikon D60, Olympus E420 and Canon Rebel.. but ended up buyin sony instead after staff recommendation.

Am in love with the tiltable LCD screen! Quite useful!

Welcome! Join our outings... We don't bite. Much. :)

I just want an entry-level camera. The Sony A200W (dual kit lens) is a good value compared to other popular brands' entry level. The in-body image stabilization, great jpg colors, big enough LCD, very informative display (LCD & viewfinder), quick access buttons and menu, wireless flash control does not make me feel I own an entry level camera.

Before buying my first DSLR, I read a lot of dpreviews on C, N, P, & O. Played a lot with C & N demo units at Courts Tampines. But when I walked-in a Sony display centre and got my hands on the 1 week old A200 demo unit, I feel the controls are very intuitive and ergonomics is very good (for my touch).

It is more than good enough for a newbie like me but then when I joined Sony users' outings, the hard-cores with their A700, Minolta, G & CZ lenses blow me away! So the room to grow is very high in case you want to build a formidable system. It is not true that you have limited choices of lenses, you can grow bankrupt if you can't control yourself to get hold of the legendary Minolta lenses, Tamron & Sigma alternatives, and the newer G and CZ.

If you are not the techy type and just want to go and shoot with good company, then the alpha mount bunch is the family for you. :bsmilie:
