why Canon 7D kit is 15-85 and 500D is 18-55?

I guess the answer to this question is:

15-85 > 18-55, and
7D > 500D

Better lens for better camera hehe.

If they make 15-55, its gonna be a lousy lens, because canon won't want that lens to cannibalize the sale of their excellent 17-55. The 15-85 is better and more expensive than the 17-85.

o.O just get a prime. solves all question. or maybe a sigma 10-20. o.O jeez. if you're so particular, why don't you raise it with Canon? like what the other CS-ers have said, they do things from a business standpoint, not to satisfy your whims and fancies. if not, they would have an option for custom lenses, such as choose your own max aperture, length, magnification etc.

Hi TS, got this from canon website.

Model Recommended Retail Price
EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM SGD 1,369.00
EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SGD 369.00

Why are u comparing a $1369 vs $369 lens? (OT abit, now then i know RRP of 18-55 is so expensive. Haha) if u want a 15-55, it likely to cost ard 1000-1200. Ask yourself if u are will to add ard $1k to ur kit 1 price?

I do agree that the norm is changing becos of the compact camera. Most compact are offering 28mm which is slightly wider than 18mm on crop body. Usually only some expensive compact offer wider like LX3 with 24mm. But they still got some time before they can match 16mm on DSLR. Maybe the norm in DSLR will be 24mm soon in few years time.

Buy 10-22 if you need UWA :)

if every comment from people like u and canon think all these comments are actually workable, they would've create the 1-800mm f1/ for all to use.

Can imagine 50+ old man holding 800mm lens .

That would be suicidal....

Because when the 500D was released, there wasnt any 15-85.

how come no one mention that the 15-85 has USM and USM cost money to make?

EFs 15-85 is quite expensive considering the price of EF 24-105. Of course a FF body is likely more expensive, but FF+24-105 is nothing like 1.6x+15-85.

I don't get your point

FF: 24-105
1.6x 15-85: effective 24-136

don't they both start at 24? or am i missing something?

it's simple - canon wants you to buy the 10-22mm.

and its not just some micro USM...it is the Ring type which is of a higher quality - the real deal. Fast AF-ing.

why not, just make a 15-55 non-USM version, cheaper version for 500D? :dunno:

As mentioned earlier, optics is not cheap to make at 15mm wide. Additional elements needed to confirm its wideness and at decent quality.
Just look at the price of EFS 10-22mm.
