Sony Nex can fire without lens, and lot of the SLRs too...

Thank you for the info. Btw, what is the purpose to fire a camera without lens attach?

hehe, i'm not sure.

if you aren't sure, don't mention "other cameras"

the purpose? one of the reasons is, when mounting some manual lenses that are reallyyyyyyyyyyy old through an adaptor, the body can't recognize them, thus the shutter won't release. so you need to have to enable the camera to release the shutter without the lens attached. hence that option.

Got it and thank you for the explanation. A bit chim for me to digest, haha. I hope I won't go through this stage.

Not only Nikon 1 cannot fire without lens attach, all other camera can't too leh.

This is not correct.
For many cameras, it can be set in the menu to enable shutter release w/o lens. (eg. Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic)
The others like Canon and Sony can use other brand lenses too via adapter, so they can do it too.

A breakthrough is described as :A sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development, esp. in science

the Olympus PEN E-P3 and many other DSLR/DSLR-like cameras are already capable of 60fps for video
it is no technological breakthrough, it is not new, not revolutionary

10fps for stills is also not considered as a breakthrough for a camera with no flapping mirror

the AF speed certainly needs more, much more, hands-on experience from real users before anyone can claim it as "fastest AF breakthrough"
Nikon 1's 60 fps is about still pictures (not videos), at 10mp. E-P3 or other dSLR can't do that.
10 fps is quite a breakthrough because Nikon 1 does subject tracking and AF-C at the same time.

The one thing that's hangs in the balance (for me at least) is the adaptor...

Dun be too shock by the numbers... It's only abt 3.5 times whatever u see in a FX camera..

If you already own a DSLR, its a waste of money.

not entirely true for people who wish to have a lighter camera and still be able to use the nikkor lenses they own via the F-mount adapter.

That would be me... as soon as the F-mount adapter is available (at a reasonable price), I'll take the plunge.

If I were to get this camera, I think it would be for:

- compact size
- good performance
- satisfying my "Nikon fanboy-ism" :bsmilie:

but somehow I feel that the F-mount adapter will have limited application for 'normal users', since relatively common lenses like 18-55, 35/1.8, 50/1.8 etc would give uncomfortable fields of view with the Nikon 1 system.

I don't know... could be way off the mark :)
