Hi Guys,
I am newbie here, both for CS and for diving. Next month's long holiday, I plan to Pangkor island in Malaysia for one-week relax stay. Does anybody know about the diving activity around this island?

PS. Pangkor island is in the west coast of Malaysia, near Ipoh, may not be affected by monsoon in this season.

My Equipment: Canon A80 with WP-DC 900

Thanks for any information.

there is a report in this issue of FINS, where some marine researchers went to check out the Straits of Maleka. According to them, they were surprised that beneath one of teh world's busiest marine shipping route, there was pristine waters, good coral growth and marine life rivalling that of Sipadan near Pulau Perak (I cannot find any info on this Pualu on the internet).

WEll I only tend to believe things only when i see it with my own eyes. if u search the net and found nothing on diving in Pangkor, u can always call the hotel u are staying in to enquire.

Eric

My friends who've dived in Pangkor rave about the immense fish life there. However, they do say that viz can often be less than 10m and conditions may be unpredictable.

I dived with DiveRiau before. They have a nice cosy boat, unlimited supply of drinks, and a nice DM call Alice (shes all i remember :p, cant remember the ang mos names).

water is more of greenish then blue, not really alot of stuff there but its better than hantu definitely :p

And I will return to dive with them when i have the chance again :)

I remember my instructor friends telling me he dived there before, cant really remember... as there are no really dive boats there, they rented a bum boat and went diving.... as they were leaving the site, the boat man pulled up a gigantic seafan along with his anchor.... I was told the visibility is normally less than 5m when water is good.... go figure....

Yes, Goondoo. Alice is a nice DM. One of the ang moh's name is Yann, French guy. Can't remember the other.

Planning to go with them again soon also but their nice cosy boat is spoilt at the moment.

eh maybe we can plan a trip to riau ah? im quite interested in going leh :)

Thanks kthan, ScoobaKev and Goondoo for your info.

Yes, I cannot find any Pangkor's diving info. in the website. I think that means not popular at all there. Maybe even don't have any diving shops.

If so, I won't dive there since I don't have my own diving suits and equipments...

Let me figure out the conditions, will let you guys know later ..

wahaha...

that will reeeeaallly take a LONG time!!! if i dive 100 dives every year, it'll take twenty years to log 2000!!! :sweatsm:

Wah...20 years quite long...I hope I'll still be diving 20 years from now.

Maybe you should start logging 200 dives a year....so 10 years will do!

waaaa.... ok, lets count ah, each weekend dive trip is about 6 dives, so in order to clock 200 dives, i have to dive 34 weekends in a year, out of 52 weekends, 16 weekends are monsoon .. which means, i have to dive every weekend in season!~ cham liao lo ...

if dive good places, e.g. manado, being the cheapest and best dives in its price range, it is about sgd1,000 for say 15 dives... that will cost me about 14k per year, and total 14 weeks of leave.. .. ...

Wah, you really know how to calculate ah...headache man. No way we can dive so much, have so much leave & $$$. Looks like we have to settle for the 40-50 dives a year....

with the DSLR setup u are buying, u better dive even more to bring down the average cost.
