I just returned from Sipadan and did 14 dives in 4 days. It was great diving. Missed out the barracudas thou. However the other group saw it.

The jacks are still there. Went hammerhead hunting but didn't catch any.

Heard that it is easier to spot hammerheads in Mabul.

How was sipadan Overall? I'm heading there in Mid August for a week. Hopefully it would be good.

If you are talking in comparison to Aur or Tioman, there is really no fight.

The corals formation there are beautiful. Turtles and white-tipped reef sharks are seen on almost every dive there. It is also not those 1 or 2 but 4 to 5 turtles on every dive. Other notable creatures are the bumphead parrotfish and the leopard shark. Of cos, as mentioned earlier, there is the school of jacks which probably has 300-600 fishes in there. Did not form a tornado thou.

However the downside was the not so good visibility. It is at most 10 to 15m. Frankly speaking I was expecting around 20-30m at least. Probably expectations too high.

It is an experience to dive on a wall. Nudibranches are difficult to spot thou. (probably I am lousy).

If you are going, I would advise diving with Borneo divers as they are the nearest to the drop off. They are very professional and would try to find the stuff you want to see. (no guarantee thou) DMs there really try their best to find the hammerheads after a foreigner requested for them. Thou the way they try is quite extreme, they would go down to 40-50m to find.

Didn't go to Mabul so can't really comment there. However the comments I heard regarding Mabul is really something that one should fork out money to go. I could not arrange in time so didn't go. Understand that there are pygmy seahorses, mandrian fish and hammerheads there.

If you go Sipadan, you must do a night dive and a dawn dive. I only did a night dive. It is really spectacular. The bumpheads would come to the drop-off to sleep at night. On one night, we were really lucky to see close to 10 bumpheads with size ranging from 80cm to maybe 1.5m and turtles resting

Didn't do a dawn dive thou. Reason: couldn't get up Understand that the bumpheads would form schools in the morning and head off. However you have to wake up very early otherwise would not have enough surface interval for the 1st boat dive starting at 0700 to 0745.

Oh yah, he brought a A70 and 256 card and exhausted the card on the last day. Can't remember what resolution he shot. However definitely not the highest. Advice is bring more CF cards.

However if you really run out of space, there is a shop on Sipadan itself who would download and write it to a CDR for you. Think is RM$50. (not very sure). For people, who want to shoot, can also rent cameras. They say they are going to rent out digital soon.

Got videography also if you are interested. They shoot for you. Very good videography. If in large group, it would be worthwhile

Sounds good man... I'm going to take around 2-3 Gigs worth of Compact flash with me. So hopefully it will last. Considering the cost of getting there, I want to make sure its worth it.

Yeah, I got planned dives at three sites, Sipadan, Kapalai and Mabul.

Don't think I'm going to hunt for Hammer heads if the depths are way past 30 m. Don't think its worth it. Don't fancy getting the "bends"

Did u not get to see the mandarin fish or those macro life? U did 14 dives... what else did u see?

Did not see the mandrain fish. Saw a few nudibraches, frogfish, garden eels.

Oh yah beware of the triggerfish. Its nesting now. Got attacked by them.

From what I understand, hammerheads are usually beyond 30m. (maybe some1 can verify).

No mantas and whale sharks thou. Didn't dived at Kapalai as well so cannot comment.

I guessed you would probably need 2-3 days at Sipadan to see everything if you are lucky. and explore all the dive sites.

Good luck and do share your photos with us! I really hope you'll get to see the humongous school of barras - when i went in June last yr, the huge spiralling school had disappeared and only smaller groups were around.

Kapalai and Mabul are the macro sites. Try to get a min of 3 days at sipadan (4 is better) and the rest at kapalai/mabul.

I'm tempted to try it with a close-up filter.

Nope not yet, but I have been tempted to get an olympus kit. With the ability to put 67mm lens, filters.. I would love to try the color correction filters to see how much of an improvement it will make over the bluish photos instead of getting an expensive strobe.

I made my own colour filter using a cokin filter taped to the housing :bsmilie:

The colour filter definitely helps somewhat in reducing the green/blue but the trade-off is that you lose a few f-stops and prob hv to use higher ISO resulting in more noise. A must-have IMHO given the low cost and visible benefit. However, a filter can never replace a strobe if you are taking non-macro shots.
