by the way, Zerstorer, does Color Balance in PS work on the principle of Complementary Colours, and Colour Wheel?

Not sure what exact point you are referring to by this, but the basic colour balancing variations tool works on this principle.

i mean, the complementary colors, and colour wheel concepts combined are the basis for Color Balance in PS? like, add a colour, to remove the "other" complementary colour?

If you need white as white then shoot using the custom white balance.

Actual Day Outdoor Wedding shot in cloudy -3 is to produce a warm effect and to compensate the D100 off camera pictures which in general(to my limited use and knowledge) tends to be cooler.

Btw, as Zerstorer pointed out, poeple do not always want a true white to white. That is why apart from WB control, 81A,B,C filters are sometimes also used to produce a warm effect on photos.
(although some may argue that it is used in cloudy situation to counter the blue cast)

cheers=p

set custom WB for use as datum, then shoot in RAW, and batch process with set custom WB or as desired. :D

Yup, I use AWB because I still face this hit-or-miss white balance. To prevent my "white" from varying, i'll usually try to use one of the preset modes, and skip using a white card to set Custom WB. where got time in sports, with all the action? :p

regarding the nikon part, that question beats me too. however, Watcher did demonstrate to me when we met up in Starbucks, while chatting over the WB modes, the +/- 3 adjustments. that's where i learnt the extra flexibility of the nikon system :)

I heard my name being called... :D

The reason for the Cloudy -3 rule is very simple: warm skin tones. The problem is that on AWB, the so call WB is set by the environment. Case in point: if the background is orangy, the camera on AWB will attempt to compensate by making it cooler, just like in a sunset shot. By setting to a fixed WB (cf AWB) you are saying that this is what I want the image to be.

However, is a warmer or cooler picture wrong? :dunno: No, not really. But it must make some sense. What I mean is that the image say under florescence cannot be green if you want to do standard portraiture; the skin tones will be totally off.

That is why I prefer shooting on RAW: the WB is not fixed into the file. I can then process the files properly or even the same image differently depending on my needs.

That is also why I still use a GM Color Checker occasionally to ensure that the colors are right.

Also, to be consistent, the display must be calibrated. Else, how would you know what you see is correct?

thanks for the clarifications, Watcher! :D Too bad, I'm skimping on the storage first, speaking of it, TWO of my SCSI hard disks bailed out on me yesterday... RMA time! So that's a main reason why I don't shoot RAW (other than slow recording by the 10D -> CF)

GM Color Checker, what's that?

Well, all these can be solve by $ :D Especially the last one: jump camp

GM CC? Gretag MacBeth Color Checker, just the most photographed color chart around :D . You can get it at CP... ;)

Oh, ok, didn't know it by the shortform. Paiseh ah.... you got any calibration stuff for loan? :D

well if you are really so particular abt the WB, then shooting raw is the way to go. well if you think that 10D is writing too slow to the CF, either, get a faster CF, or change the body. Well at least the 1D is much faster in this area. or you can try to skimp on your firing technique. Know when and how much to press. Well for a Pro like you, I dun think it a problem rite>?

Dear BlueStrike,

I am NOT a photographer by profession. Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but my current needs do not dictate a need for the 1D/1D Mk II as yet.

The question is, do you want to recreate what you saw with your eye or do you want to have reproduce white as white?

WB settings are determined by intent.

zerstorer you are correct.
