Which Travel Zoom combo would you prefer?

If kiasu , I usually go with 8-16,17-50 and 55-300

If I roughly know what I will be expected I will go 8-16 + 35mm + 18-55 Wr (in case rain)

If weight is a consent and I travel with my boy , I go with 8-16 + 35mm

I just couldn't leave my 8-16 at home .

hahaha simon, there's just no way one can leave the 8-16 behind @travelling when u've gotten used to it. as for me, its crucial for vacation in europe!
PS: just came back from another europe trip with some more new photos!

btw TS: i carried an 8-16 and a fast medium prime, which in my case is singma 30/1.4

What are your thoughts on travelling with just primes? Let's say, the DA15 and DA35 limited only?

Or would it be smarter to pair the 18-55 kit with the DA35?

Depends what you are shooting. I only have and use the DA21, FA43, DA70 on travels now. Usually use just one most of the time.

So it can work, if you are comfortable sticking with one lens for long sketches, or you don't mind changing lenses now and then. And if the people you are travelling with also don't mind, cos it takes a bit more time.

10-20/15; 24/35/43; 85/135


With the 24mm, I can actually use it 90% of the time.
The 135mm gets really very little use when I bring that as a long option. I prefer 85mm for the longest lens.

TS, get K01 for your 2nd body, so you won't miss a moment when you're changing lens. :devil:

It's a backup camera too in case your main camera got problem.

Unfortunately, i have been carrying a film cam as a 2nd cam for recent travels and i don't really wanna give that up yet carrying a 3rd body will be tad difficult

Went to Western Australia in October last year for wildflower season. Brought along the DA*16-50, Sigma 8-16 and the DFA Macro 100WR, AF540FGZ and the K5 and battery grip. Back breaking at times! Some scenes would have benefited from a longer tele too, but not feasible to carry so much around. Ended up using the DA 16-50 ~75% of the time, although I did appreciate having the other 2 around.

i went japan last week...
i bring 16-50, 100mm , 50 mm, 55-300 and flash...
my wife bring 18-55kit and 35mm 2.4
in the end i use 16-50 for 95% time and 100mm for 5%
my wife all the way 18-55 without use of 35mm
55-300 and flash all the way in hotel room, but i bring because of concert and an indoor event at HK before japan trip...

i think most of the time we don't really care to change lens... just shoot and go...anyway we to there enjoy, not to get killer shoot...
so 16-50 and 18-55 for us...

by the way, the snow at hakona mountain still not able to kill our k-x(even with its kit lens)...battary also very lasting for fullday shots... became not enough reason to hoot the k-5 from Yodabashi....

i have noticed that when i am walking around the city, i actually need the wide end of my zoom (in my case that is 18mm) often to take everything in. I also noticed that sometimes, when i want certain details high up in the buildings, i will actually need to pour it right out to 135mm several times. Taking pictures of people will range between 20mm to 60mm most of the time. This confirms that, as a one-lens solution, the 18-135mm is Pentax's most versatile and compact usage.

My gripe is with the IQ not coming close to the Sigma 10-20mm. I want something that can be as useful as the 18-135 and at least have the IQ that matches the Sigma UWA but that's not available. So i have to split that range up somehow.. the thoughts right now is a Tamron 17-50 and a DA*50-135. They will however deliver in other types of photography later though (eg. the 50-135 would be useful in future portrait work) But the problem when you travel is I do expect plenty of lens changes on the go if i bring that combo...

So right now, to keep lens changes to a minimum, i am thinking of getting a 17-70mm and accompany it with a Sigma 10-20 and a 100mm. What do you think of this combo?

DA*50-135 or 70-200 are not light lens..not sure if you will mind carrying them while on trip..my 50-135 travelled once to HK with me..after 1st day..it stay at hotel for the rest of the trip

how about 10-20 then tamron 28-75? for the 100mm..might not be necessary if u dun mind cropping..just my tots..

If I were to travel, realistically I would just bring 1 lens which would be the 17-50 tamron 2.8

I believe I would only shoot with this for 100% throughout my vacation.

But talking about combo of 2. It would be the tamron 17-50 2.8 + dal 55-300.
Dal 55-300 is not a massive lens and it is light because of it being a plastic mount and it's build.

Range of 17-300 covered. Only a small 50-55 range uncovered which would be insignificant.

It would also be nice to slot a sigma 10-20 (planning to get this or pentax12-24 in the near future) with the tamron 17-50 2.8

1st combo would be good for places like south Africa, Thailand nature park etc where birds or animals would be part of the shoots.

2nd combo would be good for places like Europe or any other cityscapes with interesting buildings or just emphasize on nature landscape and not birding or animal shoots.

So I need to ask myself where and what I need to shoot
