hehe the only reason you need to get the 180mm 2.8 Nikkor is the knowledge is that it's one of the best lens in the whole Nikon lineup. I haven't seen as many rave reviews for a lens as the 180mm 2.8 (ALL versions from AI to current AF-D), and many have accorded it a legendary status. Unfortunately, most people haven't even heard about it or don't use it, preferring the 80-200 and now the 70-200 over it....

i owned both the 70-210 F4 and 180 f2.8 lens. both produce really sharp and saturated photos but in terms of handling both in AF and MF modes, 180mm wins hands down Tried my hand at 80-200mm f/2.8 (2 touch) but didn't like the weight. sold off both 70-210 f4 and 80-200 f2.8 and kept my 180mm f2.8 lens...now getting a quality 2x TC for my babe

Hows the diff in af speed and sharpness wide open between the F4 and the 180mm?

sharpness is excellent for both lens. it is obvious which is a faster lens right? love the inbuilt lens hood for the 180mm - very convenient. i use a lot of MF with the lens and handling is much easier for 180mm.

AF speed actually is not very fast for the 180mm. It's acceptable on my F100, but not blindingly fast like the AF-S lenses. It crawls along on my F75. MF however on the AF 180mm is very good. The focussing ring is very well damped and focussing action is good. The focussing throw is quite long, so the image snaps into focus, unlike my AF 50/1.8, where if you try MFing it, you will pass the point of focus in an instance without realising it.

Xdivider, you might want to try a PN-11 on the 180mm for Macro work (which is primarily what I bought the 180mm for). Magnification is about 1:2.3, working distance is around half a metre.

I have a kenko 25mm but I found diopters more convenient and easier to handhold.

I see... what sort of magnification can you get with the diopters?

Using the 6T with a 24-120, I could get pretty reasonable shots of larger butterflies like tigers. I guess its ard 1:3 to 1:2 using the 120mm (180mm effective on dslr).

Interesting, how do you fit the 6T on the 24-120 w/o causing vignetting in your pics?

Isn't the 6T a 62mm filter while the 24-120 zoom has 72mm filter thread (which would mean that you would have to use a step down ring to mount the diopter on that zoom)?

I used a 72->67 and 67->62. I have even successfully used a 250D which is 58mm using a 72->58 ring. It seemed that the problem of vignetting is eliminated by the 1.5 crop.

Can anyone advice how much a brand new or 2nd hand TC-20E would cost?
