Which Sonnar?

I am intending to find a 50mm for my M2, and used to own the Canon 50/1.8 and the collapsible summicron, both are nice painterly lens, but does not have the look that I like.

I chanced upon a Rollei 35 S, and while I don't like the mechanism of the camera, the lens is really something else. It's a Sonnar 40/2.8 that performs magnificently wide open. I don't know how to describe the look of the rendering... there's just something about sonnar that seen so unique.

Shot wide open... it's not surgically sharp, but the drawing from the lens has something that I like.

I like a lens that is versatile at distance and close up across all apertures. I am considering the following option:
1) Nikkor S.C. 5cm F/1.4 or Canon 50/1.5
2) Zeiss C Sonnar 50/1.5
3) Summilux 50/1.4 Pre-Asph version 2

For my need, the summilux will definitely fulfill, but I like the drawing of Sonnars better, so it's the last on my list. You could probably guess that from my list I am looking at faster lenses.

The vintage sonnars by NikCan seen to be optimized for close performance, while with a 50mm I am taking most of my pictures 3 to 5 meters away.
The C Sonnar seen to be the safest choice for that range with the original formula optimized at f 2.8, but I am very sure I'll dislike the focus shift when I used it wide open, I won't use it often but it'll be nice to have.

My main question here for the ZM C Sonnar is would I have any problem with the optimised at f/1.5 version WHEN shooting 3-5 meters and beyond at apertures from f2.8 to f5.6?
From what I gather from the net the f2.8 version is better across the smaller apertures at all distances?

The above mentioned question also applies, for nikcan sonnar copies.

Finding these lenses, shall be another headache.

Thanks for your time

Try the original Zeiss Sonnar:
1) Zeiss 50mmf1.5 Contax mount with Amedeo Adapter
2) CZJ 50mmf1.5 in LTM
3) Early J3 (early 50's) where they used original Zeiss glass.

There's also a half Sonnar that's very nice too, Topcor 50mmf1.5. This lens is very hard to come by. I have only seen two copies!

If you want a ZM optimised for f1.5, Popflash has 3 available but they are all in the new mount that supposedly have light-leak issue for long exposure.
Zeiss, it seems, is not addressing the issue. Reason why I didn't buy one.

I can let you test all the 4 lenses that you mentioned above (+ ZM-C sonnar optimized for f1.5 if you want). Text me

If you like the Sonnar 40mm f/2.8 on the Rollei 35s, why don't you just use that lens on the M2? It is available as a LTM/M mount lens when Rollei release the 35RF rangefinder camera system, together with a Planar 80mm f/2.8 too. That 40mm is based on the exact lens that you favor.

Cheers,

I have both canon 50/1.5 and nikkor 50/1.4 (poisoned by benny). I like canon 50/1.5 very much, I tend to bring it out more than nikon and lux-v2. I always want to get the zeiss-c too but it is not in my top wish-list now haha. If you want to test any of mine, text me haha.

& now u're trying to poison me bro... ;p

Michael, Lawrence and Mai! Thanks so much for your offer for *GAS ATTACK*, I'll need to find an opportunity to escape work first lol.

Benny, the reason why I did not consider the 40 is because I am looking for a lens that is on 50mm range and is two stop faster. I may consider that after I completed my 35-50-90 setup.

Cheers everyone!

same here n sold the nikkor

I usually show folks my minty Nikkor 5cm f/1.4 on the Epson or their M8/M9 and they usually love the results. Then I show them the Canon 50mm f/1.5 after they played with the Nikkor.

If I have to pick only 1 50mm Sonnar, it will be the Canon 50mm f1.5 LTM. Thank goodness I don't have to.

Cheers,

but I have to say, the Canon 50mm F1.5 sonnar copy build is sexy

ZM sonnar is great for me. Old skool look but some find it soft wide open if you can live with it. Thanks to buddy Max for his great help to find one for me.
