which Sigma lens ?

My friend wanna get a new lens for himself, he is going for a multipurpose lens from sigma but than he is unable to make his decision and so he asked me for some advices.
He is considering this 2 lens.

1) 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM
2) 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS

Any comments or advices for this two lens ? does anyone personally own this lens don't mind if you could tell me some pros and cons?

And i have another question, the 18-125mm F3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM is a much slower lens due to F3.8 but than it has a HSM, than again 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS has a F3.5 which is much faster but than it doesn't has HSM , my question is that which is a much faster lens?

i had already did some research in google but than i'm still kind of blur.
Sorry if i made a mistake or a error, i'm still a beginner too.

The newest all rounder would be the Tamron 18-270mm VC if i am not wrong. usually for such lens, newer would be optically better but is highly subjective.

usually the term fast lens is reserved for F2.8, F1.8 and so on.

lenses that has built in motor usually have quicker and quieter focusing speed.

which is better depends what you need vs what you have to spend.

i am not sure which one is better, but from online forums/reviews tend to side with 18-125 for the better IQ.

please take note of those i highlighted, how can f3.8 is MUCH SLOWER than f3.5?? :think: it is not even 1-stop. i would say that NO multipurpose lens is fast enough. mostly will start from f3.5 and above.

It is not even 1/3 of a stop! 1/3 stop is F3.5 to F4.

F3.5 to F3.8 is only around 1/4 stop.

If you want convenience go for Tamron 18-270 VC. Or your camera brand's equivalent.

If you want IQ or speed (AF or aperture), avoid lenses with such a big focal length range.

one stop equals to √2 (approx. 1.41). so from f3.5, the next stop should be 3.5x1.41=4.95 (approx. 5).
for f3.8, it's (5-3.5)/(3.8-3.5)=5

so to be more accurate, shouldnt it be 1/5 stop? correct me if i am wrong. tq

I would advice getting a tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the new sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM which has yet to come out.
Much better IQ and its convienient as well .

IQ and small aperture are the main weakness of superzooms but if you dont mind i would reccomend the 18-270 aswell as its really covers a great FL .One thing for me as i have the sigma 18-200 is that it really is slow... especially at night if i go out with my friends , quite a handful of my shots will be blur from a slow shutter ... only ways is to use flash which is quite irritating ...

better say what lens first.....but then its always the photographer and not the gear.

so whatever lens your friend pick, there is no "wrong" lens if the above addage is correct right?
