which prime?

the 35mm on a 7D is too tight as a casual walkabout lens... the 24mm on a 7D is more suitable for this purpose....

with the 24mm, you still could hold the camera in your left hand, stretch it out fully, and take a couple shot with ur gf.... but with the 35mm, sorry this kinda candid shots is not possible...

get the 24mm

With the 35L on crop body, it is still possible to hold out at arm's length to take a self-portrait couple shot with your gf. Tried that, did it.

not really...some pro's are using 85mm F1.8 attach on their body.
hehehe

*just my 2 cents*

Do you have other lens? Say a zoom lens that covers both 35 and 24mm. Try out each focal length see is it to your taste first. Both can produce high quality images, it's just your style.

35mm

Actually it really puzzle me why 24mm and 35mm seems ok (as so many of you recommend it), but when someone uses a 24-105 or 24-70 on a crop, it is always commented that it is not wide enough for crop :bsmilie:

If that statement which most people mention is true, then isn't the 14mm the only sensible choice here?

I think when they have 24 - xxx mm lens is not wide enough they are assuming that the user will take landscape pic.

The walkabout lens TS is considering here seems to be taking objects and self portraits...so when not considering vast landscape (otherwise do handheld pano) 24 or 35 is ok.

Anyway I don't think you want to spend few hundreds or thousands to get a lens so that you can handheld your camera and do couple self snapshot. You will need a tripod or some support so that you can compose well and take pretty pictures so 35 or 24 are fine in my opinion.

TS can consider sigma 20mm F1.8 also...

;);)

Just buy a point and shoot cam if u only want to capture your moment w/ ur gf or an iphone will work also ... : ).

IMHO, your 17-40 is enough for your walkabout lens since ur using crop body. But if your planning to buy either 24L or 35L go for 24L it is much sharper and have good reviews compared to 35L.

And when you upgrade to FF body you will definitely more appreciate your 24L ... : ) ( i am saying this coz i have also 17-40 on 5DmkII & my next dream lens is 24L for my wedding events ... : )

How about TS-E 24 II ? You can tilt , shift and rotate her....I meant it.

24mm is more useful while 35mm does better in protrait. You need to decide yourself.

I use the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for casual walkabouts.

The focal length is enough to shoot "across-the-table-portrait" shots, f1.4 great for low light.

Tried the 24L before and honestly speak, not much of a difference.
But thats just a mere 15mins hands-on experience, maybe time will show its true colours ?
