ok guys,

i have always been craving for a leica M6 with a 35cron,recently i went past cathay and came across this Mamiya7ii RF which seems to be a very good camera with a 6x7 format..
i shoot slides 95% for my own leisure, which camera would u choose if u were me ??? the dream leica with the 35cron(used ard $4k) with the postage stamp size slides ?or the new mamiya 7ii with the 80mm F4(new $2880!!)with the nice 6x7 format ??
would u forgo the 2 stops diff in speed and size for the bigger trans ?
i know i could use higher ASA film, but i prefer finer grain slides..
i do not like to shoot wif a tripod either..this purchase will mostly be a personal camera not for my work..
Of coz i love to own both, but $$$$ is hard to earn nowadays  got many other commitments..
juz for reference,i have 2 RB67 with assorted lenses, a Rolleicord(shutterspeed not accurate), 4 nikon bodies with assorted lens..one G1 and A60..which camera would U buy ??leica or mamiya ??

thanks !!

leica

okie...i have not used a mamiya personally, so can't comment on that...but I have used a m6 for a short period of time.. the faint sound(if u can hear it) of the leica's shutter, the ease of operating the body and the ability to take a shot w/o anyone attention is simply too tempting...hahaha~~

but then again...do u have a budget to stick to??

:D

thats y i'm selling my F5 :bsmilie:
i actually tried the M7ii at cathay last week..now leaning more to mamiya, coz i think leica output too small for the price..
maybe when i got some spare cash lying around, then i'll get the leica.

:D

Mamiya, for the size of slides.
It is really a gap.

*bigger is better* :bsmilie:

Okie, I may be in a position to answer the question as I have both. An M6 Classsic as well as a Mamiya7II. As you mention that you take mostly slides and that is where the Mamiya7II truely shines as its lenses are contrasty and they have a quality that is readily apparent compared to a 35mm slide.

True, the Mamiya have lenses that are slower F4 and slower, but its a rangefinder design and there is no mirror slap and I have always hand hold it without any issues and shooting at Velvia rated at ISO40 going down at speeds of 1/30 - 1/15. It is easier than to handle than most other 6x7 which since you have two RBs, I am sure you will know.

What are the downside of the M7II? The lenses do not focus close enough so if you like to take portraiture shots, this may not be the setup for you. Even with the 150mm lens, you will not be able to get close head shots and you will have to resort to a fair bit of cropping which is just a waste for the 6x7 format.

However, if you are looking at environmental portraiture and landscape shots, then the Mamiya7II is a great setup and the 43mm lens is highly regarded even though it is based on a Zeiss Biogon design.

hi,
thanks for all advises,i have decided to send my Rolleicord in for CLA instead..i think i would enjoy alot more with 6x6 trans and $2880 in my biscuit tin rather than putting the $$ in cathay cash register.. :)

You have to ask yourself. After you have the Mamiya, will you continue to crave for the small, light, expensive, pocket sized leica?

uhmmm but u still need a small and discreet 35mm system, don't you?

:nono: :nono: :nono:

not in this bad economy..maybe when things get better :blah:

With $2,880, sure you can get "a small and discreet 35mm system". Like this one

http://www.ritzcam.com/catalog/images/IIIfClam.JPG

(p/s: its actual price is USD1,495 . But do it only when the economy is really good :) No, I'm just kidding, with that $$$$, go get a set of Hassy )

i never try a hassy b4 leh..the price is too prohibitive for me to even think about it..
the kit is usually affordable, but who would be satisfied with just one lens..adding CZ lens is like buying diamonds.
lucky i'm very satisfied with my mamiya system,so no urge for a hassy. :D

Hello Kex,

Can you tell me more details on CLA? (TLR) Do it in S'pore or overseas?

thanks :)

Any competent camera repair shop should be able to perform a CLA for ur TLR.
what details do u need ?

Just got the mamiya for the big negs.at first wanna get the Minolta CLE but cannot find in SG,ah, the rangefinder with "A" mode built years back before the Leica M7. but me mostly shooting B/W, so how's the contrast for the without filters on?? been shooting B/W films with filters on 35mm system all along.
