i'm using the old 18-70... am really tempted to make the jump for the 17-55..
or maybe, i'll just save up and go for the venerable 17-35 and use that as a dedicated wide angle lens.. =D
I have the 50mm f1.4 and find myself always stop down to f2.8  But it's a cheap and good portrait lens on my crop sensor....17-55mm should be better all rounder although I don't have one, I have the 17-35 instead and I find most of the time it suit my shooting style in landscapes and indoor photography
primes are the way to go. Sharp light and relatively cheap for the quality your getting. But then ultimately you must ask yourself. What your shooting. Your shooting style.
for me it really depends what kind of environment are you taking the photo.
If there isn't much space to maneuver, then i would get the 17-55 and sacrifice the DOF so that i don't have to struggle to get the right composition.

After all the struggles emotionally, I finally give in to the temptation and bought the 17-55mm today.
Will test out the lens this Saturday in Chinatown and Taipei next week.
