Ya i agreed with yao86 too..
Me now at D90 + 18-105 VR. I intend to get a prime len 50mm f1.8G which is much cheaper than 1.4G. If no budget i will go for 1.4 instead. :D
Soon after will be getting a flash too SB600?? Mostly my shot will be events and some outdoor travelling..
Not sure whether i am on the right track... haha

i din know nikon got a 50mm f/1.8G.
i din know nikon's f/1.4 is cheaper then f/1.8.

wat i mean is 1.8 is cheaper.. haha
1.8G? oh.. type wrongly just follow quote from yao..
thx for the correction man..

Aiya, any DSLR can be beginner's DSLR. Just see if you got bling bling anot, and also see if got thick skin to bring that d3x cam out while you're still learning.

buy a d90 and go sleep.

i also beginner,
at first i thinking of D40.
eh, limitation on non-AFS lens cnanot auto focus.
ok, think big, go for D80.
eh D80 similar price or so with D90. $1k+
aiya,
Get D90 lah.

that's how i went thru the thinking process.
now is , eH!
Fx camera better lehh, no crop factor and better in terms of functionality.. =[[
but no $$$ so i no talk. haha!

FX is good if you want FOV the lens has on the tin, otherwise crop factors...

As stated, any entry DSLR will give superior results to P&S, so go for a walk, try them out, even rent a couple to see how you feel on your own time without salesman "want or not?"

That way you get what you pay for, and feel comfortable.

D90 would be nice to go with beginners...:)

Along the same thoughts.... D90 ah? Add a bit more can get D300s, can meter with non-CPU lenses.. Then again, add a bit more can get D700... FX... Then might as well get D3.. Maybe D3X... 24MP... Or why not wait for D4?.....

Yeah, I got this thought too. Hahaha :bsmilie:
End up, I bought my first DSLR (Nikon D300) with all my savings. Left only S$50.00 in my saving bank account for my meal on that month.
No regret till now. Everytime I hold it on my hands and the feeling was just so great.
At that time if I have another S$1,500.00 to spare, I will buy D700 too. Because I know I want the best gear to take the best pictures that I can afford. That's me.

WTF?

No, seriously. You're not making money on this. Please do not commit financial suicide. And even if you were, you have to manage your cash flows wisely!

Everytime I hold it on my hands and the feeling was just so great.

the best part is, you could probably have held another camera and the feeling might be just as great.

i feel great when i take a good picture, not when i hold an expensive camera. :bsmilie:

looks like we have an equipment junkie here...

Ha, i experienced that (50 bucks left) too. Jus that i am not as crazy to go till d700. Not till i know the limits of my D80 (my first DSLR too). Not saying that u are crazy, perhaps passion?

any camera can be a good camera for a beginner.

only thing is, that how steep a learning curve it will be for you to learn how to use a DSLR.

so question to TS: how bright a person are you?

Yeah, I got this thought too. Hahaha :bsmilie:

You student or NS boy issit? okay what.

But remember, its the lens and flash which is the bottleneck.

Is D5000 a good model for beginners? It costs a lot less than D90 ;p

if for me, i'll go for the kit lens D90 + SB600 (imo SB900 overkill in most situations)..... & start saving for a 50 F1.4 prime as that lens can keep for decades if not life.... as it's literally one off investment..... lower DSLR models can't use AF-D lens so that severely restricts lens choice imo.....

A good beginner cam if budget allow is D90 kit. else the lower end D60 or D5000 and now D3000. personaly i will got for D90, cos its got a better grip and feel and the controls are better.

the kit offer a good reach in terms of focal length and the camera can use all type of nikon lenses and in terms of hardware performance , the D90 is pretty good.

once u have gotten used to the camera and understands the effects of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and WB. then its time to move onto better equipment AKA the lenses.

u will only learn to appreciate constant 'F' lenses after u understand aperture. and will also learn to appreciate prime and their big aperture, and see the different in in using different aperture to give u different DOF

after knowing how to appreciate lenses and what they can do for you, u can then look further in getting a camera body that suit your needs. maybe its the 1st DSLR u been using till now or a newer better body.

jumping 1 shot to the best is costly and might not be your cup of tea in the end, but it save your $$ if photography is really your cup of tea. another $$ saving method is to do research and understand what u want or need and buy the correct equipment, but this can be done only if u understand the limits of your equipment and what u will want and the market can offer.

I totally agree with the above statement. speaking from personal experience, i bought a D90 + twins lens kit. with my kit lens, i learn how to control my shutter speed, iso and exposure. After a few months i purchase a 50mm f1.8 for portraits shoots and this exposed me to the world of bokehs. With this lens i had to learn how to use aperture and focusing properly. Y focusing properly? because at f2.8, your focusing point has to be accurate. You want your subject eyes to be pin point sharp, not his ears or nose.

With the kits lens, i also discover my shooting style. I used to think i love to shoot people. however, after shooting sometime i decided landscape is my cup of tea. Had i invested my money on a 17-55 f2.8, I would not have purchased my 12-24, which is my favorite lens right now.

Unless you really know the physic of photo-taking and your photo taking preference, i would advise you to take a kit lens to explore before settling down on a better lens. You can sell off your kit lens when you decided to upgrade them or keep as a back up lens. Most importantly is to enjoy your photo taking experience.
