I intend to buy an A7. but i am abit headache for which FE lenses to buy. I need a more general lenses for walkaround. Can the experts please kindly advise me? thanks.

General walkabout, FE (I assume AF too) and not pricey would be the kit lens - 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6. Maybe just start with this one first? You'll sure get more later :p

i intend to get a better 1. so i dont need to upgrade. previously i was using a canon 5d classic.

if you want a "better" one, it would be the Zeiss 24-70 F4.

If you want FE with AF, not much choices:

- 16-35mm f4 Zeiss
- 24-70mm f4 Zeiss
- 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 (cheapest)
- 70-200mm f4 G
- 35mm f2.8 Zeiss
- 55mm f1.8 Zeiss

All of them are good lenses :p

If you don't mind manual lenses, there are plenty of options.

i thinking of 1635z but I wish to do portrait as well. not very sure this lens is good for portrait? as i hardly see any pictures.

then it's the FE 24-70. from landscapes to portraits.

but i read a lot of negative feedback. which pull back my decision.

IMHO 28-70 good enough for general walk around

Landscape to portrait, I think the 55mm might be suitable. That is my opinion la, some people just dun like the 55mm POV.

My first FE lens is SEL2470Z which I bought with the A7 body. I have used it mainly for friends' events and IMO, it's good. When I used it for cityscape shots, I found the corner a little soft so I got myself wide primes for that. Just take the reviews/complains in the Internet with a pinch of salt. It's best to test it out yourself at the Sony Centre using your SD card and compare in big screen at home.

Personally, I would recommend SEL1635Z + SEL55F18Z for landscape + portrait coverage. Also, SEL35F28Z if you got spare $$$ as it makes the A7 really portable. This is my current travel combi and it's less than 2kg including the A7 body :)

SEL1635 + SEL55 is a nice combo.
Currently I travel with SAL24F2 and SEL55F18.
With A7II supporting IBIS, I think people can seriously consider adapting A-mount lenses as there are plenty of good primes and cheap third-party glasses available.

Agree. Especially the Minolta telephoto lenses like 70-210mm f4 beercan.

I got the SEL2470Z for its zoom versatility and wide angle coverage. However, I seldom use the zoom beyond 50-55mm, so there is a wastage of some estate.

Also, got the SEL35F28Z for the compactness, sharpness and street photography.

I initially wanted the SEL1635Z but the size is huge and at my favourite 35mm coverage, I had to lug it along for street shoots. Not easy.

I am planning to add a wide angle (20-21mm) for some causal landscape. Got the Samyang 14mm today but it was way too wide for me that it is now at BnS

I got 24-70 for versatility
55/1.8 for its IQ and pop
Cv 35/1.2 for low light conditions.. Got some decent shots in robot cafe during show time

2470 is very useful. However, SEL2470 is not good at 24 and 70. The sweet spot of this lens is actually around 35-50. After I found out 70% of my shot with this lens is using 24 and 20% is using 70, I decide to sell this lens for SAL24F2...

I have the same dilemma.

I'm getting an A7S and these are the lenses I am interested in.

- 24-70mm f4 Zeiss: Versatile lens plus useful for video with its OSS, and all my life I have been using zoom lens except mobile phone.
- 70-200mm f4 G: Coverage for tele events & stuff.
- 35mm f2.8 Zeiss: Portable walk around street photography lens.
- 55mm f1.8 Zeiss: Sharp lens and bokeh portraits.

I am trying to cut down on cost but I have no idea which lenses to "cut out", and which ones to get first. Sigh.

I've both and the SEL1635Z is not much bigger and heavier than the SEL2470Z after removing the hood. Sometimes I took the wrong one when I am in a rush :p Here's the comparison side-by-side.

If you need AF and have the EA4, you can try Minolta primes. I used to have the 20mm f2.8 and I like it. Otherwise, you can try RF lenses like VC 21mm f1.8 (not the f4 which is not good at corners for even the A7/R). I prefer RF as wide primes because they are compact and good.

First, find out what is important to you (bokeh, versatility, tele) and what you shoot more (events, street, cityscape). Some compromises I can see are:

1) Get the kit 28-70mm rather than 24-70mm which is about 1/3 the price. Do you need the 24-27mm extra width? Some reviews say that the wide and tele end of the 24-70mm is not that good. I kinda agree but it's really not as bad as they put it. But for the price and Zeiss tag, it should be better IMHO :)

2) Get the EA4 adapter and Minolta 70-210mm f4 rather than 70-200mm f4 G if you don't use it often. The EA4 is about $299 (PWP) and 70-210mm about $180ish. The best price I get for FE lens is $16xx. Downside is that weight of the combination is about 100g more than the FE lens, without OSS and focusing is slower. With IBIS in the future (A7SII and A9 maybe), the OSS gap should not be that big.
