Which lens will you buy ?

I dunno about yours but mine is pretty sharp wide open up to around 135-150mm. It's kinda soft after that until 200mm. I dun tink there's a need to stop down till f/5.6 to get superb sharpness.. by f/4 this lens is already superbly sharp.

I dunno about you. All these are relative terms, depends on what you are comparing with & your own internalised methods of measure. Rather soft, pretty sharp, superb sharpness, sharpx3, 70% sharp, 99.9999% sharp etc etc. So if you compare with say the 70-200 f2.8 VRII, would it be super superbly sharp :) What I expressed is but an individual's actual experience & opinions, not a equipment review or absolute scientific research & facts. Most if not all lens perform better when stopped down. And by soft, it doesnt mean blur, but less contrasty.

I don't know why you have to get defensive about it as I don't see how my comment was in any conflict with yours. My own feedback is also based on my own experience with that lens and I'm just curious as to why you mentioned that it's soft wide open since it's exactly the opposite to how I felt about this lens. I'm clear that soft can mean less contrasty as well, but it's not what I actually experience with my copy of the 80-200 f/2.8. I'm also clear that stopping down a lens will give better results. From my own comment, what I actually meant that stopping it down to f/4 to me is also great enough that I don't see the need to stop it down further to f/5.6 since there's hardly/no difference at all when shooting at f/4 or f/5.6 other than depth of field.

You could have said/posts all you wanted about the lens, about your experiences, opinions etc - without having to quote my comments. That you did is fine with me , I believe in freedom of expression, even in disagreements, criticisms.

Frankly I don’t really care whether one praise or condemn, agree or disagree on, if its something like camera lens. A person can say a lens is the absolute best in the whole wide world or a piece of sh*t & it wont make any difference, as far as I am concerned. But its your preface “I dunno about…” which is dismissive, offensive. I merely return the favour & you can feel its sting, hence the reaction. You still don’t realize or understand. Nothing to do with the technicalities of the lens.

And you contradicted yourself with this statement :) If you don't really care, why bother getting defensive and personally attack me in return when you could have just ignored? Still, in any sense, I don't even find my post offensive at all. I've already clarified myself as being curious and I guess you refused to believe what I said.

I don't see the point in arguing with you further if you still want to personally attack me. This thread is meant for discussions on equipments, not about one's behaviour.

Most of us don't find irvine's comment offensive at all. Please focus on the topic and stop whining. This is not grandma's house.

I don't find Irvine's comment offensive too, you should just chill and move on bro.

I find that I need flexibility of shooting at 400mm in the zoo. An 80-400VR will be very good. If money is not an issue, try the 200-400VR. I advise that you rent the lenses to try them out first before buying.

I don't find "I dunno about you..." offensive or dismissive.

Let's move on.

You just couldnt resist this, isnt it? We have already moved on, posted elsewhere & TheChef has kindly moved back on to the topic already. This is just your opinion, just as it was my opinion. Just because there are some acquaintances/friends here to "support" an opinion means it is right. If all this is not about behaviour, then can just simply ignore what I posts, ignore my opinion, take it as I am over-sensitive, had a bad day or whatever, dont try to correct me, & just really move on. If someone step on another's toe or feelings, just apologise, not argue & justify. People who try to make peace do not take sides.

Irvine is not my friend, just like how you are not my friend as well. I am just saying it from a point of view from the 3rd party.

You may think many are taking sides. Most did not and neither did I. And you are right about one thing, you are overly-sensitive. Take it easy sometimes. Life is short.

Is this consider soft?
