Which Lens to use for Night Shots?

To the semi-pros offering advice in this forum. What if I do not wish to use Flash for outdoor picture of boat quay and that bridge there that separates it from Clarke quay? I took some at high ISO recently, and they came okay, but when you see it at 100% resolution on a big 24 inch monitor imac, the lines of the bridge are blurred. I think the solution is a tripod, not a lens. Even the basic 18-200mm can take excellent, sharp photos but a tripod is a must, because even with VR and a very patient meditative posture for shooting, there is ALWAYS some blur. For night photo, get a tripod. Get a tripod. Did I mention, get a tripod.

totally agreed..get a tripod.
unless you buy a F2.8 lens, then take at high shutter speed with rear sync flash..:)

Hi,

I gather night wedding event... 70mm above lens would be good as you also want to capture 'subtle moments'. For wedding.. I recommend f/2.8... if can go lower... as in f/2, 1.8, 1.4. better. You mentioned subtle moments... So I wonder... why flash... well... you will need SB800, SB900 for the event. I totally agree that rear curtain gives fantastic action effect. Rear curtain means the first flash is weak while the 2nd flash is strong in 1 click. Depend on how you use it to your advantage. iTTL with bounce off the ceiling would be enough to fill up the place with some lighting...
