Which Lens should i Get to replace my 18-55mm?

I was thinking to get either Canon 17-55mm F2.8 or Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 few months ago, but went for Canon 17-55mm F2.8 as tamron is noisy when focusing, imagine you are in a quite restaurant, everyone will start looking at you. Another reason is Canon has the IS which is very important to me and it comes in handy when the time is right.
only down side it is huge for its range for crop sensor. :(

Apparently the Tamron 17-50 /2.8VC is much quieter than the non-VC although it's still louder compared to the 17-55IS.

Must try to know i guess.

Autofocus slower than 17-50mm non-VC in my POV.

Hi ALL,

I am using 400d currently and my 18-55mm kit lens is spoilt. So i am considering a new lens. I had a EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens currently. Which lens should i consider?

1) EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - SGD 1,369.00
2) EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - SGD 1,299.00
3) EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM - SGD 1,199.00

Any advice would help greatly!! Thanks~:)

If you are looking for something to cover below 75mm, go for 1) or 3)
If you want an all round lens, get rid of your 75-300 and get 2)

OK now talk about price

1) new about 1100 , used (but still quite new cause just launch last year) about 900~1000
2) new about 1000 , used about 750~850
3) new about 850 , used about 400~500.

that cover you pocket potion.

last IQ for the lens.

personally, used to have 1) and 3) so will not comments on 2)

1) IQ is very good and range is good if you take more on landscape and portrait. You might need to get a grip to balance the weight of this with your camera body. Price abit on the high side.

3) IQ average but the price for a used one is worth what you pay. a good upgrade from kit lens if you do not wish to spend too much.

got consider this?
Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4.0 DC Macro OS HSM

new pdt, seems not bad

Have too much $$$ to spare 17-55
otherwise the tamron 17-50

Based on review IQ of the Tamron VC is poorer than the non VC. But this is also up to the "user" to decide.

heard that the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 IQ is quite good.

+1 for efs 15-85. Used it, fell in love with it. Got used to the weight alr. In any case 17-55 is even heavier:)

i have not try 15-85mm, i am using 17-55mm F2.8

I was having a hard time deciding this 2 for general purpose lens, went for the 17-55mm F2.8 in the end as i shoot in low light quite often, especially in restaurant.

do not like to use flash, unless really bobian. like the range of 15-85mm, how i wish there is a 15-85mm F2.8 L, then i will have a good range lens with capability of shooting at low light, and with the 'L', i will be a weather proof lens. but i only can dream of such lens.

I would have preferred canon to make 15-85 constant f4 tho... Constant f2.8 would make it a monster. :) Thankfully 4-stop almost makes up for lack of speed. ALMOST...

You wouldn't see this as it conflicts with the existing L line-up.

I bought a 15-85 to replace my 18-55. Nice and wide. It's an excellent walkabout lens and should serve me well until i change to FF or i need a faster lens, which i would change to 17-55.

grats! i have the same too. really good lens. i rarely remove it from my cam body! i am thinking of getting the 24-105L for walkabout, but i will be missing my wide 15mm.

i got mine from JO @ 1080 last march. other places sell around the same range i think

From your shortlist of lens, I will pick 15-85mm. I think it complements your current setup and has good IQ from reviews.

If you like the range that 18-55 provides when you are using it and want an upgrade in IQ, 17-55mm f/2.8 is also a good choice. Though it is more expensive and is heavier. Cheers~
